Supplemental taxes part of broad plan

WOONSOCKET – After projecting that the city would incur a growing deficit on track to reach $95 million by 2017 the Budget Commission yesterday endorsed a still-sketchy, five-year plan to crawl back into the black, mainly through supplemental taxes, changes in union contracts and cuts in pension and other retirement benefits.

Mardi Gras 2013 lives up to annual revelry

WOONSOCKET — It was a night of fun and revelry for the 19th Annual Mardi Gras event held Saturday in Woonsocket.
Festivities took place at two locations with shuttle service bringing partygoers to and from each site —St. Ann's Art's and Cultural Center, where the crowds were entertained by Bob Leonard's Slippery Sneakers Band, a local zydeco band who has been entertaining at the Woonsocket Mardi Gras for many years, and the Elks Hall, where Jeff Gamache and his orchestra entertained the crowd. Gamache has been a local entertainer for many years including at the Woonsocket Autumnfest.

Driver in crash admits to dialing his cell

WOONSOCKET – The driver in a crash that knocked out power across a wide swathe of the city last week admitted he lost control while he was on his cell phone, but there isn’t much the police can do about it.
“He was preoccupied by dialing his phone, but he wasn’t texting,” said Lt. Brad Scully of the Woonsocket Police Department’s Accident Prevention Bureau. “The law says you have to be texting while driving to be cited. It’s very specific.”
