Chicken backers flocking to City Hall -- meeting tonight

April 1, 2013

WOONSOCKET – The fledgling pro-chicken movement lands at City Hall tonight, but it will have to persuade officials to defy the recommendation of city planners to get the ban on backyard fowl lifted.
The planners have raised questions about the city’s capacity to enforce proposed regulations, up for first passage, that would allow residents to keep up to six chickens.
Planning Board Chairman George Sargent says the board is also concerned about noise, odors and unsanitary conditions that might result from approving the proposal.

Funds for old Milk Can all dried up?

April 1, 2013

NORTH SMITHFIELD – A quick look as you drive by on Route 146 north is more than enough to show that this past winter was a hard one for the historic Milk Can ice cream stand.
The relocated local bit of novelty architecture has been marred by graffiti and also lost a few of the wooden shingles on its circular roof that skirts the three-story wooden milk can.
A sign wards off trespassers but it is possible to get a closer and safer look at the old Route 146 landmark from the Valero gas station next door at 948 Eddie Dowling Highway.
