Autumnfest challenge beckons for kids

WOONSOCKET – The time for training is almost over and local kids will get to test their fitness when the Autunmfest Kids Challenge gets under way at the World War II Veterans Memorial State Park during the city’s Columbus Day weekend festival on Saturday, Oct. 12.

Once again this year, Nancy Phillips, a Woonsocket School Department physical education teacher, and Call Publisher Mary Lynn Bosiak will be running the kid-level, mini-triathlon with the help of several volunteers and sponsors such as Simon Chevrolet and the Blackstone River Federal Credit Union at Monument Square.

They built A Special Place, and it lives on after they retire

WOONSOCKET – Gertrude A. Franco winces as she lifts her right arm to dust off a glass shelf lined with statues of saints, crucifixes, and other religious articles and gifts.

The longtime owner of A Special Place, a religious gift shop tucked away in a corner storefront on North Main Street, Franco, 76, is battling painful arthritis in her shoulder, a condition that has made daily operation of the shop difficult at best.

A big "Deal": Ann & Hope site to serve as stage for new game show

CUMBERLAND — There is a new addition to the businesses in the Ann & Hope Building at 1 Ann & Hope Way, one that will require some talented individuals adept at running a game show.

The “Greatest Deals on Earth Show” is already being put together by the new Studio 300 entertainment services company Ed Migley founded for the Big Flea Superstore occupying the former Ann & Hope department store space in the former mill.

DOT preparing closer look at Burrillville stretch of Route 102

BURRILLVILLE – The R.I. Department of Transportation is putting the finishing touches on a road safety assessment report for Route 102, which could see construction of road safety improvements, including advanced dilemma zone detection systems and rumble strips, early next year.

“We are still finalizing the Road Safety Assessment report for the Route 102 corridor,” said DOT spokeswoman Rose Amoros. “The document will incorporate comments from all of the parties involved in the review and will be used to develop plans for improvements based on the findings.”
