BREAKING NEWS: Federal charges filed in Woonsocket shootout

WOONSOCKET – Federal criminal complaints have been filed in U.S. District Court in Providence charging the two men who were allegedly responsible for an armed home invasion at 67 West Park Place on Sept. 12 with multiple federal counts.

EAST PROVIDENCE – Police have made two arrests in connection with Sunday’s
shooting at Onna Moniz John Park, but are not releasing the names of the
suspects until later this afternoon pending further investigation,
according to police Lt. Michael David.
“We have two individuals in custody,” David said. "The quick arrests in
this are a direct result of police officers being familiar with the
community in which they work and inter agency cooperation."
Meanwhile, the 22-year-old victim in the shooting was being listed today

RIDOT says bridge to get fixed by mid-October

WOONSOCKET – The state Department of Transportation has begun preparing for the emergency repair of the Hamlet Avenue Bridge steel expansion joint near the intersection of Hamlet, Davison Street and Florence Drive.

The problem involving an upward movement of the metal teeth in the joint was discovered earlier this month by city Highway Superintendent Rick Lambert and reported to the department’s bridge inspection division. The expansion joint on the east side of the steel girder bridge has become misaligned in the past and resulted in repairs to make it passable to vehicles.

Autumnfest challenge beckons for kids

WOONSOCKET – The time for training is almost over and local kids will get to test their fitness when the Autunmfest Kids Challenge gets under way at the World War II Veterans Memorial State Park during the city’s Columbus Day weekend festival on Saturday, Oct. 12.

Once again this year, Nancy Phillips, a Woonsocket School Department physical education teacher, and Call Publisher Mary Lynn Bosiak will be running the kid-level, mini-triathlon with the help of several volunteers and sponsors such as Simon Chevrolet and the Blackstone River Federal Credit Union at Monument Square.

They built A Special Place, and it lives on after they retire

WOONSOCKET – Gertrude A. Franco winces as she lifts her right arm to dust off a glass shelf lined with statues of saints, crucifixes, and other religious articles and gifts.

The longtime owner of A Special Place, a religious gift shop tucked away in a corner storefront on North Main Street, Franco, 76, is battling painful arthritis in her shoulder, a condition that has made daily operation of the shop difficult at best.

A big "Deal": Ann & Hope site to serve as stage for new game show

CUMBERLAND — There is a new addition to the businesses in the Ann & Hope Building at 1 Ann & Hope Way, one that will require some talented individuals adept at running a game show.

The “Greatest Deals on Earth Show” is already being put together by the new Studio 300 entertainment services company Ed Migley founded for the Big Flea Superstore occupying the former Ann & Hope department store space in the former mill.

DOT preparing closer look at Burrillville stretch of Route 102

BURRILLVILLE – The R.I. Department of Transportation is putting the finishing touches on a road safety assessment report for Route 102, which could see construction of road safety improvements, including advanced dilemma zone detection systems and rumble strips, early next year.

“We are still finalizing the Road Safety Assessment report for the Route 102 corridor,” said DOT spokeswoman Rose Amoros. “The document will incorporate comments from all of the parties involved in the review and will be used to develop plans for improvements based on the findings.”

WOONSOCKET – Adelard Provencal, 88, got to see a lot of the Pacific Theater while serving a young U.S. Navy man during World War II and will be remembering those times while visiting the World War II Memorial on the Mall in Washington, D.C., this afternoon.

Students’ feat earns BVP teacher skydiving journey with Gist

LINCOLN – Blackstone Valley Prep Mayoral Academy’s Drew Madden, 27, admits skydiving was never really on his list of things to do someday.
But that won’t keep Madden from bailing out of a plane over Middletown this afternoon with Commissioner of Education Deborah A. Gist.

Madden, a noted math instructor for the Blackstone Valley Prep charter school network serving Lincoln, Cumberland, Central Falls and Pawtucket, made a commitment over the summer to support the middle school’s reading program, and his skydiving excursion is the payoff of that endeavor.

Suspicious men lurking at Bernon

WOONSOCKET – The Police Department is investigating another incident of suspicious men approaching students near a local school, this time the Bernon Heights Elementary School, off Logee Street.

Police reported Friday evening that the incident occurred during the day on Thursday, and parties involved contacted the department about the incident on Friday.

The incident was believed to be similar in nature to incidents reported to the department earlier in the week, according to police.
