WOONSOCKET – A Providence County grand jury Wednesday indicted a city woman who allegedly set fire to her boyfriend’s home after discovering he was having an affair.
Corrine Latraverse, 30, of 26 Monty Ave., is facing one count of first-degree arson.
Latraverse is accused of setting fire to the home she shared with her longtime boyfriend and their three children on March 15. The house – 26-28 Monty Ave. – has since been razed.
WOONSOCKET – It was always a crazy idea.
There may be no better proof of it than what happened last year after Chuck Horbert and his buddies launched their canoes and kayaks into Burrillville’s Branch River, amped up by 5 inches of rain from Tropical Storm Andrea. Hobart crashed his canoe in the rain-swollen waters, and his far-flung dream of leading a waterborne trek the length of the state, by river, was over as soon as it began.
GLOCESTER – The history of the arrival of public transportation in Chepachet was celebrated Sunday afternoon with a sampling of life in 1914 and reminders of how Glocester changed once it did get on the map.
The Chepachet Union Church teamed up with the Glocester Heritage Society to hold a 100th anniversary celebration remembering the arrival of the first Rhode Island Co. trolley in town and the big stir it created when it did.
NORTH SMITHFIELD – Half-eaten tuna sandwiches and other food scraps students discard during their lunch periods in North Smithfield are being repurposed as feed for more than 3,000 pigs living in Burrillville.
Through a new recycling program established and overseen by town Recycling Coordinator Donna Kaehler, the North Smithfield High School, Middle School and Halliwell School turns food scraps leftover from school lunches to nutritious food for pigs at My Blue Heaven Farm in Pascoag.
Rhode Island gubernatorial candidate Gina Raimondo, second from left, smiles as she is introduced at the official opening of her new Woonsocket campaign headquarters at 1 Social St. in the city Thursday evening. Raimondo stated to her supporters, which numbered around 35, that it's going to take "the same boldness and courage" she brought to her tenure as General Treasurer to bring the state back from it's dismal economic doldrums.
WOONSOCKET – It’s official: Former City Controller Christine Chamberland is the city’s finance director.
The Smithfield resident had been serving as acting finance director since mid-April, but Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt announced Chamberland’s permanent appointment on Thursday.
“Christine’s vast experience in finance and her dedicated assistance in the transition of my new administration were key components to my decision,” the mayor said.

WOONSOCKET – Mount St. Charles Academy is reducing its staff by about a dozen teachers at the end of the school year.
WOONSOCKET – Where’s the best location for the new registry of motor vehicles in the city?
It doesn’t matter who you talk to – from the chief of the state Division of Motor Vehicles to the mayor and the guy on the street – everyone seems to come up with the same answer: Put it in one of the hollowed-out retail plazas on Diamond Hill Road.
“I’m promoting it from an economic development standpoint,” said Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt. “We’re all concerned about the exodus we’ve seen up there and we need to regenerate an area that’s been deflated.”
WOONSOCKET – In addition to beefed-up school aid, the $8.7 billion state budget signed by Gov. Lincoln Chafee a couple of days ago has something that Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt has been lobbying for a long time: money to bring the makeover of World War II Veterans Memorial State Park to the starting line.
The spending plan includes $1.25 million over five years for park upkeep and staffing, a previously missing piece of the funding puzzle that had waylaid the project.
