Blackstone cops say bodies were those of newborns

BLACKSTONE – The bodies of all three infants removed from a home at 23 St. Paul St. appear to have been newborns, Blackstone Police Chief Ross Atstupenas disclosed Friday morning.
The chief issued a statement following the arraignment of Erika Murray, 31, in Uxbridge District Court on multiple charges stemming from the grisly discovery in her squalid, vermin-infested home home Thursday.

MENDON -- Academy Award-winning actor Matthew McConaughey, along with a movie crew, arrived in town Thursday night to film a scene for the move “Sea of Trees.” McConaughey along with co-star, Naomi Watts, spent a couple of hours at Imperial Gas on Route 16, where McConaughey shot several takes pumping gas. About 100 residents came out to watch the filming. Read the full story in Saturday’s Call.

Murray wins Cumberland mayoral primary

CUMBERLAND – William S. Murray wasn’t going to call it early in the evening but in the end his win as Cumberland Mayor in the Democratic Town Primary Tuesday appeared to have been a clear win all along.

The town’s Democrats not only picked Murray from a field of three candidates including fellow Town Councilman Manual N. DaCosta and former Town Councilman Daniel J. Alves, but also sent him on to an unchallenged Nov. 4 vote with a nearly 50-percent margin of the primary votes cast.

The city’s Autumnfest is just around the corner, but before that annual event, the city will host the new and improved Riverfest on Saturday, Sept. 13 as “Riverfest by Day”— and on Friday, Sept. 12, as “Riverfest by Night.”

Woonsocket OKs chicken ordinance

WOONSOCKET – Acting against the advice of the Planning Board, the City Council repealed the ban on backyard chickens Tuesday, reversing itself in the process.
The council voted 4-3 to allow residents to keep chickens in the least populous neighborhoods, a little more than a year after defeating a similar proposal. The new measure requires a follow-up vote of affirmation in two weeks to become law, but Councilwoman Melissa Murray, the lead sponsor, doesn’t expect officials to change their minds.

Couple's fight leads to drug bust

WOONSOCKET – What started out as a lover’s quarrel morphed into a foot chase and a wrestling match before it ended with the seizure of more than $14,000 in cash and prescription pharmaceuticals by the police.
By the time it was over, Edwin DeJesus Jr., 27, of 110 Alice Ave., and Ariana Z. Roman, 19, were facing a string of charges, including domestic assault and battery, obstructing police, one count each of possession of a controlled substance and resisting arrest.
