WOONSOCKET â€” The possible closing of Fifth Avenue Elementary School presented by School Superintendent Giovanna Donoyan drew loud objections from city parents, teachers, and support staff back in April. It was put off at that time due to overwhelming opposition.
But the small elementary school in Fairmount could be closed nonetheless when the state Budget Commission running city affairs considers a final 2012-13 budget at either its Monday or Thursday session.

WOONSOCKET â€“ Police took a bite out of illegal drug sales this past week, executing search warrants that resulted in the arrests of two city men on drug distribution charges.
Police seized two bags of marijuana, a quantity of Hashish, and 20 pills of oxycodone during the Special Response Team raid at 25 and 27 Founders St. early Thursday morning, according to Det. Thomas Beargeon.
The SRT team made an entry at the apartment at 7:10 a.m. and found several adults and three children inside.
WOONSOCKET â€“ National Night Out will take place at River Island Park on Tuesday, Aug. 7 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.
The event, which takes place in cities and towns all over the country, is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW). It is co-sponsored by the Woonsocket Police Department and Woonsocket Safe Communities.
National Night Out was conceived as vehicle for law-abiding citizens to tell criminals to get out of town.
BURRILLVILLE â€” A delivery truck began dropping off new trash and recycling carts to residents last week for the new automated cart based, curbside residential trash and recycling program, which starts Monday, Aug. 6.
Residents can start using the new bins right away. Trash should be secured in plastic bags (not loose) and completely in the bin so the lid closes securely. Recycling can be mixed in the one bin, again completely in the bins so the lid closes.
There will be information on the new program tied to the cart handle. A guide was also mailed out to homeowners earlier in the month.
PROVIDENCE â€“ Steward Health Care has asked Attorney General Peter Kilmartin to extend yesterdayâ€™s deadline for the for-profit hospital chain to close on the sale of Landmark Medical Center.
Amy Kempe, spokeswoman for Kilmartin, said the office will make a decision on Monday after reviewing the request. The attorney general had given Steward 60 days to close on the sale as a condition of approval under the Hospital Conversions Act.
CUMBERLAND â€” The organizers of the upcoming CumberlandFest promise that this year's four-day family festival will have lots of old favorites as well as some new surprises. The 22nd annual event kicks off Friday, Aug. 10.
As was the case the last two years, there will be an expanded fireworks show.
WOONSOCKET â€” Synagro Technologies Inc.â€™s plan for a $10 million heat-to-energy cogeneration facility took a giant leap forward yesterday after the Budget Commission approved a $6.5 million deal on taxes for the new construction.
The cash, to be parceled out over 20 years, isnâ€™t the only perk in the works for the struggling city. Thereâ€™s cheap electricity in the deal, too, and itâ€™s â€śgreen,â€ť to boot.

WOONSOCKET â€” If the sale of Landmark Medical Center falls through, most Rhode Islanders would blame Blue Cross, a new poll suggests.
The poll, conducted by Marttila Strategies of Boston, was commissioned by the United Nurses and Allied Professionals, Landmark Medical Center, and Steward Health Care, the for-profit chain that wants to buy Landmark.
CUMBERLAND â€” Residents will get the opportunity on Aug. 7 to offer input on a proposed plan to consolidate the town's fire services as a single municipal public safety department that would not only include the town's four independent fire districts, but emergency medical service and police as well.
WOONSOCKET â€“ The Zoning Board of Review voted 3-2 in support of a proposed expansion of residential use at the former St. Francis House at 167 Blackstone St., but not by a large enough majority to approve developer Gary Fernandes' request for more units.
The five zoners rendering the decision would have had to vote at least 4-1 in favor to grant approval under zoning board rules.
