Ronzio Pizza robbed at gunpoint

WOONSOCKET — A man robbed the Ronzio Pizza Restaurant on Providence Street of an undetermined amount of cash after holding the business' manager at gunpoint Sunday evening.
Patrol units were sent to the 375 Providence St. business at 7:30 p.m. after the armed suspect fled on foot with the stolen cash and a rifle used to carry out the robbery, police said Monday.

Citizens, officials rally for Landmark

PROVIDENCE — When Dan Couture got a nagging pain in his shoulder last month, the avid health buff from North Smithfield passed if off as the byproduct of too much exercise.
On Christmas Day, after four days of suffering, the 63-year-old real estate appraiser couldn’t stand it anymore. The pain had become so unbearable that he had has wife, June, drive him to Landmark Medical Center. There, doctors strapped him to a monitoring device and calmly informed Couture he was in the throes of a full-blown heart attack.

Martin Luther King Jr. honored on traffic island

WOONSOCKET — With a tip of the hat from President Obama, civic leaders and church groups capped a three-day tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King yesterday with the dedication of a new work of art honoring the slain civil rights leader.
Over 150 people braved a bone-chilling morning to take part in the ceremony, across the street from St. James Baptist Church, the city’s largest African-American congregation, which commissioned the steel-plate, multi-colored silhouettes of Dr. King preaching to a half-dozen followers, young and old.

School disciplinary policy is changing

WOONSOCKET — The School Committee is stepping back from its active role in disciplinary procedures for local public school students.
The panel voted this week to allow school administrators and School Superintendent Giovanna Donoyan to handle disciplinary hearings it has been conducting for a number of years.
The change is an off-shoot of School Committeewoman Vimala Phongsavanh's review of school department policies.

Police catch copper clipper

WOONSOCKET – Another copper clipper was in the can Thursday morning thanks to a tip from an alert citizen who heard someone rummaging in a vacant house in the Bernon section and called the police, they said.
Elias Herrera, 41, of Woonsocket, was arrested outside 350 Carrington Ave. at 6:19 a.m., said Detective Lt. Eugene Jalette.
“Herrera was captured while attempting to flee from a side entrance,” he said. “Inside the house there was evidence that Herrera was removing copper piping.”

Bellingham Fire Chief Ranieri answers the call of retirement

BELLINGHAM — Looking back over his lengthy career, Richard F. Ranieri pointed out one overriding concern that any fire chief has when the alarm sounds in the station house.
"You just hope that the day will end without an injury or fatality involving one of your firefighters or a member of the public," Ranieri said. "We are responsible for what happens, and it is a pretty awesome responsibility.”

State Police capture con man on the run

NORTH SMITHFIELD — A con man who has been on the run from the law for two years after swindling thousands from his victims in motor vehicle scams was captured in New Jersey Wednesday, the Rhode Island State Police said.
Kevin Millette, 45, a former town resident, was arrested at the Rodeway Inn motel in Galloway, N.J., where he had been living under an assumed name for about month, said State Police Lt. Michael Winquist.

High court affirms Delestre conviction

WOONSOCKET — The state Supreme Court Thursday affirmed the conviction of Gilbert Delestre in connection with the brutal beating death of his 3-year-old foster child, Thomas “T.J.” Wright, in 2004.
Delestre and his girlfriend, Katherine Bunnell, the child’s foster mother and aunt, were both convicted of murder and conspiracy for their role in the boy’s killing after separate trials in 2008.
Witnesses testified Delestre hurled the toddler across a room, then knocked him down a flight of stairs with a backhander, causing the boy to lapse into unconsciousness.

Judge to rule on Krawetz case Jan. 23

PROVIDENCE — Minutes after prosecuting and defense attorneys had issued their closing remarks regarding suspended Lincoln Patrolman Edward M. Krawetz' trial Wednesday morning, Superior Court Justice Edward C. Clifton informed those in Courtroom 7 he would issue a ruling on Monday, Jan. 23.
Clifton asked both Assistant Attorney General and prosecutor Stephen Regine and defense lawyer John Harwood if they could re-schedule from the previously-set date of Jan. 17, and both indicated they would.

Landmark meets deadline, but is application complete?

WOONSOCKET — Landmark Medical Center said it was sure it would meet the new application deadline set for yesterday by regulators empowered to approve its planned merger with the Steward Health Care System, but there was no word yet on whether the application is considered complete.
“We will meet this deadline,” Landmark spokesman Bill Fischer said yesterday afternoon. “They’ve asked us to address a number of issues and we believe we have. We’re hopeful the documents we’ve been asked to provide will meet the regulators’ request.”
