Serial pedophile gets 30 years

NORTH SMITHFIELD – A local man was sentenced to serve 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple counts of raping three children, the attorney general’s office announced.
Ramiro Morales, 39, will also be on probation for 25 years upon his release from prison and is subject to lifetime supervision with a GPS monitoring device under the Jessica Lundsford Act, said Amy Kempe, spokesman for Attorney General Peter Kilmartin.
Morales has been incarcerated since 2009, but his last known address was 25 Lapre Road.

Hainesworth, nominated by Obama, hopes to be state’s newest marshal

GLOCESTER – President Barack Obama has nominated former Glocester Police Chief Jamie Hainesworth to be Rhode Island's new U.S. marshal, the White House has announced.
Hainesworth currently serves as the law enforcement liaison and victim advocate for the Rhode Island chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving after some three decades in police work.
“It’s a great choice,” said State Sen. Paul Fogarty (D-Dist. 23, Burrillville, Glocester, North Smithfield). “He’s a man of incredible honesty and integrity, he’s a great law enforcement guy, and he’ll do the state and Glocester proud.”

Kids decide to go green at lunchtime

LINCOLN — Central Elementary School fourth-grader Maggie Cabana didn't want to let down her fellow students, so she decided to prepare her Wednesday lunch the night before.
“I made it at about 7:30 (p.m.); I made my peanut butter crackers, strawberries and an orange with the peel taken off, then put them all in plastic containers,” she admitted. “I did it so I wouldn't forget anything. I was scared that I'd put it into plastic bags. I didn't want to forget that's against the rules (for this lunch).”

City has budget hopes for park

WOONSOCKET — Gov. Chafee’s proposed $7.9 billion state budget includes a plum the city’s been grasping at for years — $2.6 million to restore long-neglected World War II Veterans Memorial State Park.
Mayor Leo T. Fontaine said the funds were included in the spending package Chafee proposes for the state Department of Environmental Management after an intense lobbying campaign by city officials.

Domestic assault case leads to drug cache

WOONSOCKET – There was a bonus for the police at the end of a trail that led to a man wanted for domestic assault. Just as officers closed in on Steve E. Beaulieu, another man was tossing a backpack containing $1,450 worth of cocaine and marijuana out the window, police said.
The episode unfolded in Apt. No. 3 at 174 Robinson St. Tuesday, said Detective Lt. Eugene Jalette, the police spokesman.

Woonsocket, Central Falls YWCA to merge

WOONSOCKET — YWCA Northern Rhode Island, located at 514 Blackstone St., will merge with the faltering Central Falls-based YWCA of Greater Rhode Island in a deal expected to be finalized by March 1.
“This is not a hostile take-over,” said Deborah Perry, president and CEO of YWCA Northern Rhode Island. “We’re both in favor,” and the news is in the ambitious plans she has for the new YWCA Rhode Island.

Ex-RI Gov. Garrahy eulogized at funeral Mass

PROVIDENCE (AP) — Former Rhode Island Gov. Joseph Garrahy has been remembered as a man who lived humbly and set an example for others.
The Rev. Marcel Taillon remembered Garrahy at a funeral Mass on Tuesday morning as a man of faith who rose from humble beginnings.
Taillon, the pastor at St. Thomas More Catholic Parish in Narragansett, delivered the homily at a service at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Providence.
Garrahy died last week at a hospital in West Palm Beach, Fla. He was 81.

Burrillville house on National Registry

BURRILLVILLE — The Esten-Bowen House on Iron Mine Hill Road has been added to the National Register of Historic Places, the state’s preservation authority announced.
Build around 1790, “the Esten-Bowen house represents Burrillville’s development from a period of agricultural growth and expansion from the end of the 18th century through gradual decline and subsequent transition to exurban residential uses in the early 20th century,” said Edward F. Sanderson, executive director of the Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission.

Elks are a force for good in the community

WOONSOCKET — Charity, justice, brotherly love and fidelity.
Maurice E. Berube has spent the better part of 11 years trying to promote and practice the four cardinal virtues of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. But it wasn't until last month, when he found himself the recipient of a simple act of kindness by an 11-year-old city girl, that he really understood what it meant to be an Elk.
Berube, Grand Exalted Ruler of Woonsocket Elks Lodge #850, says it happened in December when he was helping deliver 227 food baskets to needy families during the holiday season.
