If elected, Menard may have to give up pension

September 6, 2011

WOONSOCKET – When former Mayor Susan D. Menard announced her intention to run for her old job again recently, she pledged to waive the $80,000 a year salary that comes with the position and live on her state pension.
Given the city's dire financial straits, it sounds like the civic-minded thing to do, particularly since the ex-mayor's state pension is some 33 percent less than the salary that comes with the job.

September 5, 2011

WOONSOCKET — For most people, Labor Day is a last call for summer, a chance for one more family cookout or that final great day at the beach.
But at the city’s Museum of Work And Culture, the holiday was another chance to remember a difficult period of local history, a national textile worker’s strike that came to town in early September 1934 and claimed the lives of two city men in the process.
As part of its Labor Day Open House 2011 program, the Museum staged two performances of Raymond H. Bacon’s short play about the strike and its local aftermath.

Seniors seek to save their senior center

September 3, 2011

MILLVILLE — It was a moment that Millville's senior citizens had been waiting years for. The town's brand new Senior Center opened in June of 2007 and, for the first time, there was a bigger, more modern space where they could get their blood pressure checked, participate in a knitting groups or exercise classes or get information about Social Security benefits.
Now, that same building is slated to shut its doors on Dec. 31 due to budget cuts and a decision by voters in June to reject two Proposition 2½ override ballot questions.

Much of Blackstone still without power

August 31, 2011

BLACKSTONE — Main Street in this village-like outpost on the state line usually has everything a busy mother of two needs, but lately it just hasn't been the same.
“You can't do anything in Blackstone,” said Tara Rogala as she pulled up to the drive-through at Dean Bank. “You can't do laundry. You can't do groceries. I have to drive 20 minutes to Woonsocket to do anything. Not having power with two small kids isn't easy.”
