Local man learns his sentence

WOONSOCKET – A city man on Thursday was sentenced to five years in federal prison for his role in a crack cocaine trafficking conspiracy, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced Friday.
Adalberto Negron, 31, of Woonsocket, became the second person sentenced
to 60 months in federal prison for their role in a crack cocaine
distribution conspiracy which operated in Central Falls from January to
November 2013.

Young woman dies in single-car crash on Providence Street

WOONSOCKET – A 23-year-old female died in a single-car crash on Providence Street overnight, police said Thursday morning.

Neither the victim’s identity nor other details were immediately available, but Detective Sgt. Matt Ryan said the department would issue a statement later.

Longtime political reporter Jim Baron mourned

PAWTUCKET – James F. “Jim” Baron, 57, The Times and The Call’s legendary political reporter and a well-known and respected observer of all doings at the Rhode Island Statehouse, died Monday night at Miriam Hospital.
Jim was the husband of Denise Perreault, a former city editor at the Woonsocket Call, and son of Mary (Wilkie) Baron and the late Robert Baron.

Ukrainian Orthodox church reopens following 2012 fire

WOONSOCKET – Members of the St. Michael’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church community completed an emotional journey back from disaster on Sunday with a short walk from the parish community center to the front steps of the now-renovated church at 74 Harris Ave.

The members gathered in the front of St. Michael’s, near the altar area that had been a fire-charred ruin just a year ago and said a prayer of dedication for the newly restored, brightly lit and still undecorated church space.

Police halt violent domestic spat

WOONSOCKET – A city man allegedly choked his girlfriend during a violent quarrel that took place in the presence of several small children early New Year’s Day.

Javier Garcia, 39, is charged with domestic assault by strangulation; domestic assault and battery; domestic disorderly conduct; and resisting arrest.

Murray pleads not guilty to murder charges

BLACKSTONE – Erika Murray, the 31-year-old Blackstone mother indicted for murder after police discovered the remains of three babies in her squalid home on St. Paul Street, was ordered held without bail after she pleaded not guilty to nine criminal charges, including two counts of murder, at her arraignment in Worcester Superior Court Monday.

Murray was indicted on the charges by a grand jury on Dec. 16.

Two arrested in double stabbing at Veterans Memorial housing development

WOONSOCKET – Two people are facing charges in connection with a brawl on a basketball court in the Veterans Memorial housing project that sent a father and his son to the hospital with stab wounds on Friday.

Robert “Indio” Carrasquillo, 32, and Yaidelis Vega, 27, were to be arraigned in Sixth District Court today on charges of committing felony assaults in which two different knives were used.
