Hill, Paronto give BoSox acquisition Gonzalez high marks

December 5, 2010

PAWTUCKET — Looks like the American League has a new big bopper to lose sleep over. Yet as teams start assembling scouting reports on newly-minted Red Sox acquisition Adrian Gonzalez, perhaps they would be wise to consult pitchers Rich Hill and Chad Paronto, both of whom toiled for Pawtucket last season.

Mount smokes Smithfield, 11-0

December 4, 2010

SMITHFIELD – After two games of the young season, Mount St. Charles has outscored its opponents by a 21-0 margin.
“We’ve got some firepower,” Mount coach Dave Belisle admitted after the Mounties blanked Smithfield 11-0 on Saturday night. “We have a great first line. But what we’ve also found out is this team has a lot of depth.”
The usual suspects did most of the early scoring for Mount. Zach Samborsky, Brian Campbell and Trevor Plante got their goals, although Plante netted just one after scoring seven in Friday’s 10-0 romp over Barrington.

Young Friars torch Rams, 87-74

December 4, 2010

PROVIDENCE – If this was a boxing match, a good referee would have intervened and stopped the proceedings before things got too out of hand. It was a total mismatch right from the opening tap.
Providence College was much better than the University of Rhode Island yesterday. The Friars dominated in coasting to an impressive 87-74 triumph over the Rams before a sellout crowd of 12,410 at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. PC led by a dozen in the first half before going up as many as 17 points late in the game.

Winning really is the only thing that matters today

December 4, 2010

“Winning isn’t everything … it’s the only thing.”
***
Most people attribute this quote to legendary Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi. Actually, Vince borrowed it from a former UCLA football coach named Red Sanders. Its true meaning is hard to miss. Winning is the only thing that matters.

Is spirit of PC-URI game lost on fans?

December 4, 2010

It always used to be easy to have a finger on the pulse of fans and alumni associated with the Providence College-University of Rhode Island basketball rivalry.

Plante scores 7 goals in Mount's 10-0 romp

December 3, 2010

WOONSOCKET – Trevor Plante had a night to remember.
The senior standout scored seven goals and also had an assist as defending state champion Mount St. Charles Academy kicked off its season in convincing fashion on Friday with a 10-0 squashing of Division I newcomer Barrington at Adelard Arena.
Plante had two natural hat tricks in the rout. He scored the first three goals in the game as Mount took a 4-0 advantage in the first period. Derek Deschene had the other tally.

Mike Akanji leads Lincoln past North Smithfield

December 3, 2010

NORTH SMITHFIELD –Kent Crooks realizes that this year’s squad doesn’t really have a superstar or a good-to guy.
What the Lincoln High coach does know is that he has multiple players that can get the job done.
And that was clearly on display during Friday night’s non-league Injury Fund contest versus North Smithfield.
Three players scored in double digits and half a dozen netted at least six points as the Lions breezed to a 76-38 win over a somewhat-shorthanded Northmen squad at the Lovett Gymnasium. Lincoln was led by a team-high 16 points from Mike Akanji.

Defenses won't rest in D-II Super Bowl

December 3, 2010

When push comes to shove during Sunday’s Division II Super Bowl between Woonsocket and Tolman, expect both coaching staffs to put the game in the hands of their defensive units.
Each of these championship football teams depended on their defenses in tough games, perhaps never more so than during their Sept. 24 regular season meeting when the Tigers ground out a 6-0 victory over the Villa Novans.
By the end of the league season, Woonsocket had allowed just 20 points in 7 games. Tolman yielded 28.

Seach for next PawSox manager still ongoing

December 2, 2010

It appears the Red Sox are leaving no stone unturned as the search for the next PawSox manager remains ongoing. The position has been vacant for nearly a month, yet the organization remains mum on whom Torey Lovullo’s successor will be.
As BoSox farm director Mike Hazen explained Thursday, finding the next Pawtucket manager is a decision best not entered into lightly and one that requires a great deal of homework.
