Short-handed Friars top Assumption in exhibition contest

PROVIDENCE — Ed Cooley knew he was in store for some rough sledding the moment he signed up at Providence College last March.
The task is great, but even Cooley had shake his head in disbelief based on what went down prior to the Friars hitting the floor for their first exhibition game on Tuesday night. A thin roster was stretched even thinner as Cooley had just eight scholarship players available for his team’s tuneup against Assumption College.

Mounties hold off Villa Novans

WOONSOCKET — It’s been a long, difficult year for Woonsocket High, but on Tuesday afternoon, the one-win Villa Novans nearly came away with the highlight of their season and a big upset victory over their playoff-bound, crosstown rivals.
Down by a 2-0 score after a half of action, Mount St. Charles Academy battled back with three goals in the first 25 minutes of the second half and held on for a 3-2 victory before a large gathering at the Mounties’ lower soccer field.
