WOONSOCKET — Woonsocket High coach Tony Ciresi and Shea mentor Kate Corry didn’t expect anything different when their Division III squads faced each other on Monday afternoon.
After two-plus hours at the Aylsworth Ave. Courts, it was the Villa Novans that earned the win, defeating the Raiders, 4-3. The last match to leave the courts proved to be the difference as the No. 3 doubles’ team of Janessa Shyabouth and Diana Inthisone breezed to a 6-2, 6-3 victory over the Raiders’ Emenzialina Moreira and Vanda DeBrito.
BURRILLVILLE — It was only fitting that two winless teams aiming to jump start their respective seasons — or save, depending if you’re a pessimist or an optimist — engaged in a serious tussle in which the outcome wasn’t settled until the dying seconds.
In the end, Lincoln proved to be a bit more resilient in an 18-12 win over Burrillville Saturday at Alumni Field. Kyle Jackson broke a 12-12 affair with 30.8 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, the senior wideout hauling in a 36-yard pass that gave the Lions the lead for the first time.
PAWTUCKET — This year’s Woonsocket High football team bears little resemblance to the Villa Novan squads that captured Division II Super Bowl victories at the end of the previous two seasons. Graduation took its toll, along with injuries to two or three key players expected to lead the 2011 squad.
