PROVIDENCE – Minutes after finishing his 55-meter race on Monday afternoon, Jessie Charette sat down on the track and took off his racing flats. The Woonsocket High senior placed third, edged by teammate and overall winner Jalen Evans and runner-up Butch Giguere of Ponaganset at the line in a Northern Division tri-meet at the Providence Athletic Facility.
But despite coming up short at the finish in his quest for individual glory, Charette was still smiling. His trademark grin was evident.

PROVIDENCE — Freddy Gobewole has had problems with his shoulder since his junior campaign last year when he tore his rotator cuff during a scrimmage game for the Shea High football team.
But that hasn’t stopped the talented senior from tearing up the track with his unmatched speed.

An interesting aspect of Rhode Island high school wrestling is the traditional powers typically avoid one another until the final month of the dual-meet season, choosing to compete in out-of-state tournaments in December and January before taking each other on during February.
In wrestling, familiarity isn’t a good thing. Nobody likes to tip their hand before the pot gets big enough to mean something.

CUMBERLAND — There’s more than just the Lariviere twins behind this year’s Cumberland High wrestling team. Defending state champions Shaidai and Shoneil Lariviere have help from a collection of ever-improving teammates, especially 130-pound sophomore Erik Travers.
“The twins improve the team just by their presence,” Cumberland coach Steve Gordon said on Saturday night after his Clippers successfully defended their team title at the John D. Gorman Memorial Tournament. “They make everyone else better.”

WOONSOCKET --- The defense that played in spurts and gave up 10 goals during a sloppy two-game stretch last weekend took a huge turn for the better on Friday night in Mount St. Charles’ showdown with Bishop Hendricken.
Derek Deschene’s goal off a pass from Shamus Maloney with 4:50 to go in the second period snapped a 1-1 tie, and goaltender Dan Foster turned in an outstanding 32-save performance to help the Mounties grab a 3-1 victory in this marquee matchup at Adelard Arena.
PAWTUCKET – George Coderre is well aware of all the gimmicks and schemes opposing teams have deployed this season in pursuit of slowing down Diandra DaRosa, St. Raphael’s top ballhawk.
CUMBERLAND --– For the past four decades, the face of Cumberland High swimming has been Bruce Calvert. During his long tenure as the Clippers’ head coach, he produced an abundance of all-state athletes and a combined 13 state crowns (boy and girls).
Calvert no longer patrols the CHS pool, retiring from his longtime post in November only a few months after doing the same as the school’s aquatic director.
PAWTUCKET – Arnie Beyeler was sitting at the head of a table in a conference room at snow-covered McCoy Stadium on Friday afternoon, performing his first official act as manager of the Pawtucket Red Sox.

By early next week, basketball teams statewide will have reached the midway point of their league seasons.
For some boys' squads, the writing’s on the wall that their seasons will come to a close some time in mid-February. But for several others, including a plethora of area teams, the postseason is clearly within reach with still plenty of basketball to be played in the final month of league competition.

Some baseball notes geared to make you forget those snow removal blues …
There’s no question Chris Iannetta is bent on staying sharp during the offseason. The St. Raphael Academy alum is renown around the R.I. Baseball Institute for having a set routine and hating to deviate from it. In fact, it wouldn’t come as a shock to learn Iannetta possesses a key to the indoor batting cage, located in Warwick.
