PAWTUCKET â Thereâs always been a soft spot in Tommy Harperâs heart for Jacoby Ellsbury. Thatâs why it pained Harper, a 15-year big league veteran, to see the Red Sox speedster get abused and mistreated â both from media members and teammates alike â the way he did in 2010.
âA lot of people turned on him,â noted Harper on a visit to McCoy Stadium Wednesday night. âSometimes in team meetings, you would give an opinion, but it stays right there. But if a media person says it, itâs all over because itâs out in the public.â
WOONSOCKET --- The national spotlight could be on Joe Gardner again.
The Woonsocket Boxing Club fighter and EBA (Eastern Boxing Association) New England light heavyweight champion will step into the ring for his first fight outside New England and on the undercard of Saturday nightâs âSuper Six World Boxing Classicâ at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
Gardner (7-2-1, 1 KO) will fight super middleweight prospect and 2008 U.S. Olympian Shawn Estrada (11-0, 10 KOs) in a six-round battle that highlights a seven-fight undercard and expects to be the swing bout on the nightâs slate.
