Jim Doyle was among the several hundred runners, walkers and family members at the Bryant University campus on Saturday at the Shawn M. Nassaney Memorial Cross Country Race/Walk. He was there to remember his former runner, who died tragically in the 9/11 terrorist attacks along with his girlfriend Lynn Goodchild.
September 10th
BURRILLVILLE â Paris Correia ran wild on Saturday afternoon and his North Smithfield teammates followed suit.
The speedy senior scored four touchdown and fellow senior Carlos Guzman added two more as the Northmen claimed the coveted Lovett-Hauser Trophy with a 55-26 squashing of Burrillville in a non-leaguer at Alumni Field. North Smithfield garnered more than 400 total yards in the two-plus hour affair, held under a hot sun.
PAWTUCKET â Thatâs all she wrote for the 2011 edition of the Pawtucket Red Sox.
Pawtucket concluded its meek showing in the Governorsâ Cup playoffs with a lackluster 3-1 loss to Lehigh Valley Saturday night at McCoy Stadium. The three-game sweep pushes the IronPigs into the finals where they will face defending champion Columbus.
Pawtucket led just once in the entire series â1-0 after the first inning of the second game â and wound up hitting 3-for-26 with runners in scoring position, including a hitless showing in six opportunities in Game 3. Collectively the PawSox hit .180.
SMITHFIELD â On the 10th anniversary of 9/11, millions of Americans across the country will be remembering today all those who perished in the terrorist attacks in 2001.
BURRILLVILLE â Chariho Regional senior Mike Marsella registered the fastest time of the day on Saturday at the annual Injury Fund Cross-Country Carnival, held at Burrillville Middle School.
Marsella covered the five-kilometer course in a time of 15 minutes, 25.96 seconds to win the Platt III race, one of four boysâ races.
September 9th
EAST PROVIDENCE --- Jalin Braxton and East Providence High ran away with this season opener.
The Second-Team All-State fullback picked up 153 yards and a pair of long touchdowns on 11 first-half carries on Friday night to guide the Townies to a convincing 42-0 non-league victory over Woonsocket High at Pierce Field.
The Townies scored on each of their first four possessions of the contest and ended the opening half with 255 yards on the ground and a 28-0 command.
WOONSOCKET â For the first three quarters of Fridayâs game, Woonsocket High goalie Kory Lawrence didnât have to contend with too many shots fired his way by opposing Mount Pleasant.
But when the Kilties picked up their intensity a few extra notches in the crucial stage of the tilt, and Lawrence was called to action, the Villa Novan senior delivered.

WOONSOCKET â During the final few minutes of the first half, Woonsocket High goalie Melinda Rice had to contend with a vicious attack by Classical.
But each shot, nearly a half dozen in that short span, Rice thwarted away with her stick or on a diving save.
That was just a sampling of the stellar effort by the talented senior in Thursdayâs Division II clash at Barry Field. She finished her dayâs work with 16 saves, most coming at close range.
If Bruce Guindon and his high school football officiating brethren had their druthers, the installment of a fifth member to the longstanding four-man, on-field crew would have transpired years ago.
What was once a plea is now part of the Interscholastic Leagueâs pigskin fabric. Beginning this season an additional pair of eyes will be called upon to aid specifically in the judgment of pass plays and blocks downfield, two areas that in the past have been tough calls a for group colloquially called âzebrasâ to accurately decipher.
The two-a-days are history. So are the scrimmages and Injury Fund games.
This weekend, the regular season for high school football gets under way with non-league games scattered throughout the state.
Eight of the Blackstone Valleyâs 11 teams kick off tonight, and the big games of the bunch will feature two-time Division II champion Woonsocket taking on East Providence at Pierce Field and former Thanksgiving Day rivals Shea and Lincoln playing each other at Lincolnâs Ferguson Field.
