WOONSOCKET — Cumberland High scored three times in the opening period and received a brilliant 44-save performance from netminder Pat Noke in a 5-2 victory over Toll Gate High on Friday night at Adelard Arena.
The Clippers, who are 6-0 in Division II-North action, saw Toll Gate battle back from a 3-0 deficit with a pair of goals, but they ended any hopes of a Titans comeback by scoring a pair of empty-net goals in the final 30 seconds of the games.

McGair: Ryan O'Dell to wait his turn for URI '9'

December 30, 2011

A little of this, a little of that as we bid adieu to 2011 …
Ryan O’Dell will have to sit tight and wait his turn for the URI baseball team, the Lincoln native’s redshirt status for this coming spring the result of findings by the NCAA Clearinghouse. The initial-eligibility organization launched its investigation into O’Dell’s high school transcript during the middle of the fall ball season, a time when the freshman had visions of making major strides toward landing a substantial role.

Mounties capture Holiday Face-Off tourney

December 29, 2011

WOONSOCKET — Dave Belisle loves to see non-league games like this -- a hard-fought, down-to-the-wire matchup against a formidable out-of-state team that will only help make Mount St. Charles a better squad down the line when the Mounties take on their Division I opponents.
The Mount coach got one of those games on Thursday night against powerful La Salle College High of Wyndmoor, Penn., in their 16th annual Holiday Face-Off tournament at Adelard Arena.

Mount skates into tourney final

December 28, 2011

WOONSOCKET --- Mount St. Charles has earned the right to defend its own Holiday Face-Off tournament title, but in order to get back to the finals, MSC had to overcome the superb play of a scorching-hot goaltender.
St. Dominic Academy of Auburn, Maine received a brilliant 56-save effort by Grant Carrier, but Mount was able to get key goals from two of its freshmen and skate off with a 3-0 victory on Wednesday night in the semifinals of their 16th annual tournament at Adelard Arena.

Crawley second in R.I. Track Classic 3,000-meter race

December 28, 2011

PROVIDENCE – Whether it’s a cross-country or track race, there’s only one place where Trevor Crawley feels the most comfortable, and that’s right up front.
“I don’t like not leading,” said the Cumberland High junior. “I don’t feel like it’s my race.”
For almost the entire distance of the 3,000-meter run at Wednesday’s Rhode Island Track Classic, Crawley took his customary, front-runner position, rattling off consistent 200 splits between 36-37 seconds.
The Clipper standout did the necessary work for a victory in the regional meet, it just wasn’t enough.

Clippers edged by Tolman in hoop final

December 28, 2011

CUMBERLAND – Tolman head coach Mike Kayata can live with Jonathan Percy firing away from the baseline. It’s a whole other matter when the 6-foot-7 junior tees up a shot from behind the 3-point stripe.

Cumberland, Tolman net tourney wins

December 27, 2011

CUMBERLAND – By Gary Reedy’s estimation, eight years have elapsed since Cumberland High last captured the Cumberland-Lincoln Boys & Girls Holiday Tournament.
Needless to say, putting an end to such a drought would brighten the Clippers’ spirits heading into the coming year. Cumberland earned the right to play in the championship game after disposing of Woonsocket, 71-63, Tuesday night in the Wellness Center. Junior Ben Bradley paced Cumberland with 19 points along with eight assists and five rebounds.

Mount skates to win in opener

December 27, 2011

WOONSOCKET – Prior to Tuesday night’s opener against St. Joseph’s Collegiate (N.Y.) Institute at its annual Holiday Face-Off Tournament, the last time Mount St. Charles skated against any kind of competition was a league matchup with Moses Brown 11 days ago.
Any signs of rust? Not at all.
The Mounties came out flying from the first period and never let up, rolling to a 5-1 victory over the Marauders at Adelard Arena. Sophomore Tyler Scroggins and senior captain Brian Campbell each scored twice for Mount, which takes on St. Dominic (Maine) Academy in the semifinals tonight at 8.
