Gardner captures big intrastate battle with Amparo

November 30, 2012

WOONSOCKET --- It must have been the beard. Or it must have been the bright blue camouflage shorts.
No, the real reason why Joe Gardner was impressive in winning his super middleweight bout with previously-unbeaten Alex Amparo on Thursday night was that he was a very busy fighter from start to finish and showed zero signs of slowing down.

Turkey Day rivals Clippers, Villa Novans to play for Division II Super Bowl

November 29, 2012

At first blush, the task of Cumberland and Woonsocket laying the groundwork for the season’s biggest game doesn’t seem entirely daunting – especially since we’re referencing two squads that staged a gridiron tussle merely eight days ago.
With only three days between the semifinals and Sunday’s Division II Super Bowl, the art of familiarity helps to take a little strain off of the preparation process. Time has become a valuable commodity, and if you’re going to step into the ring of fire, what better opponent to have than someone where introductions are not required?

For Red Sox' Kalish, it's full speed ahead

November 29, 2012

PROVIDENCE — To Ryan Kalish, the time and sweat he’s putting in this offseason has a rewarding vibe surrounding it – the kind that provides the 24-year-old Red Sox outfielder with the sort of reassurance that he’ll be ready to answer the bell come spring training.

Villa Novans blank Knights to earn Super Bowl berth

November 28, 2012

WOONSOCKET --- For the third time in the last four years, Woonsocket is heading to the Division II Super Bowl. And the Villa Novans earned that right to advance thanks to two of the things that helped them win the championship in 2009 and ’10 – a strong ground game and a stellar defensive effort.
Senior Jalen Evans and junior Will Andino teamed up to rush for 246 yards and three touchdowns, and the Novans’ ‘D’ limited the Knights to 167 total yards to help produce a 27-0 semifinal-round triumph on Wednesday night under the brightness of portable lights at Barry Field.

Cumberland heads to Division II Super Bowl after blasting West Warwick

November 28, 2012

CUMBERLAND – Mercy!
It was yet another Big Blue blowout in a season that has pointed in one direction – the Division II Super Bowl. An appearance in the title game is officially in Cumberland High’s line of sight after Wednesday night’s 48-14 romp against West Warwick High in semifinal-round action at frigid Tucker Field.

Turnovers doom N.S. in 31-0 playoff loss to Kilties

November 28, 2012

PROVIDENCE – In his final post-game speech of the season near Conley Stadium's midfield stripe, North Smithfield High head coach Wes Pennington conveyed the following to his kids:
“Keep your heads up when you leave. You guys played your hearts out. Sure, it's a tough loss, but you have nothing to be ashamed of. We're proud of you.”
Neither he nor his staff could have said much else after the Northmen suffered a bitter 31-0 defeat to top-seeded Mount Pleasant High in a R.I. Division IV Tournament semifinal on frosty Wednesday night.

Defensive-minded PC puts away Holy Cross

November 27, 2012

PROVIDENCE — Dating back several seasons, the very idea of placing Providence College and “defense” in the same sentence resulted in snickering along with several knee slaps.
In 2012, Ed Cooley’s PC Friars are getting after it in such ferocious fashion that the opposition is having a hard time getting off the canvas. More punishment was meted out Tuesday as Providence stomped on Holy Cross, 61-42, before a rather subdued crowd, which was announced at 4,596.

Clippers' Crawley prepares for Foot Locker Nationals

November 27, 2012

CUMBERLAND — There once was a time when Trevor Crawley wanted to follow his own plan – and, of course, his coaches – but not so much his dad’s.
Mike Crawley, a 1981 Shea High graduate who earned All-State second-team laurels in outdoor track and later represented both the Community College of Rhode Island and Southern Connecticut State University, apparently had tried to offer some advice as to the nuances of distance running, but it was a “no-go.

Football semifinals move to Wednesday night

November 27, 2012

On the surface, the decision to push back the entire slate of R.I. semifinal-round playoff games to Wednesday seems as simple as the quarterback receiving the snap.
Seven of the eight games on the docket were already based at venues where light fixtures are part of the ambiance. The lone exception: Woonsocket’s Barry Field.
However, thanks to Villa Novans athletic director George Nasuti obtaining portable lights, the situation was remedied.
