Friars take care of Rutgers; Cooley lands big man Johnson

February 1, 2012

PROVIDENCE – How do you cure those Friar blues? Answer: a visit from the Scarlet Knights.
Despite playing two very uneven halves Wednesday night, Providence was able to secure a rare Big East triumph at the expense of Rutgers, 78-67. The win snaps a four-game losing streak for the Friars, who placed five players in double figures led by strong performances from Bilal Dixon (18 points, 10 rebounds) and Vincent Council (11 points, 14 assists).
“I thought today was our day,” said a clearly-relieved Ed Cooley, his Friars now 2-8 in the league and 13-10 overall.

Big weekend ahead for Burrillville

February 1, 2012

If Burrillville wants to remain in the top four of the Division I’s power standings and play for the new Championship Division crown next month, then this weekend is the one that could make or break the Broncos’ chances.
The Broncos, who are 8-4 and occupy fourth place in the division’s overall standings, are facing their toughest two-day stretch of the season in the form of a Friday 9:30 p.m. clash at Thayer Arena against first-place Bishop Hendricken (10-1-1) and a Saturday 8:30 p.m. battle in the friendly confines of Levy Arena against Moses Brown (6-5-1).
