Northmen girls fall from Div. III hoop semifinals

March 5, 2012

PROVIDENCE — In the end, it wasn’t meant to be for head coach Alisha Brannon and her North Smithfield squad.
Despite North Smithfield putting forth a gutsy and determined effort in the face of long odds, the Northmen saw their season come to a close Monday night in the Division III semifinals at Rhode Island College.
Led by 29 points from senior Sandy Kun, top seed and unbeaten Juanita Sanchez held on for a 53-49 victory.

March 4, 2012

PROVIDENCE — After his squad's 4-0 loss to La Salle Academy in the first game of the R.I. Championship Division Tournament finals' best-of-three set on Saturday, Mount St. Charles head coach Steve Shea told his kids he loved the fact they had outshot their foes, 30-18.
He also explained to them that mere attempts on goal wouldn't be enough to dispatch the Rams, but firing more quality shots at senior goalkeeper Holly Scott could change the Mounties' fortune.

Eagles down Broncos for Div. I girls' hockey title

March 4, 2012

PROVIDENCE — Just days before the start of the R.I. Division I Tournament championship series between the Burrillville and Barrington co-op squads, Broncos head coach Marc Brissette and his son spent some time shuffling through some old newspapers, just to reminisce.
They came upon one that highlighted the premier PGA careers of the Ocean State’s Brad Faxon and Billy Andrade.
“I knew we were facing Sophie Faxon, the Barrington goalie and Brad’s daughter, in the finals, and I told my son, ‘How ironic is that?’” Brissette stated. “I also said, ‘I hope it’s not an omen.’”

Westerly ousts Woonsocket from Div. I quarterfinals

March 4, 2012

PROVIDENCE — George Coderre knows the drill. As the head coach at Woonsocket High, Coderre studies the game from his sideline perch while his mind races with various adjustment schemes. Obviously the idea is to outsmart the opposition, which Coderre’s club was able to do for most of Sunday’s playoff exercise against Westerly High.

Borges scored off a pass from junior Brian Belisle 39 seconds into the second 7½-minute session to lead the Mounties to a heart-pounding 4-3 triumph over the Rams before a packed house at Thayer Arena.

Late power-play goal hands Burrillville/Ponaganset 3-2 loss

March 3, 2012

PROVIDENCE — The slow start hurt, but the late penalties proved to be the undoing of the Burrillville/Ponaganset co-op team on Saturday afternoon in the opening game of their best-of-three Division I championship series with the Barrington co-op squad.
Emily Carlson’s second goal of the game, on a 5-on-3 power play with 2:22 left in the game, ruined a dominant third-period showing by the Broncos and lifted the Eagles to a 3-2 triumph at Providence College’s Schneider Arena.

MSC proves no match for La Salle in series opener

March 3, 2012

PROVIDENCE — For the fourth time this season, Mount St. Charles had a hard-fought battle on its hands with longtime rival La Salle, but unlike their first three meetings, the Mounties weren’t fortunate enough to skate out of it with a ‘W’.
And unfortunately for the Mounties, this was no ordinary loss. This was one of their most lopsided defeats in the program’s history, and it took place on a stage they couldn’t afford to lose on – the opening game of the best-of-three State Championship series.

Hawks too tough for Broncos in playoff opener

March 2, 2012

WARWICK — Burrillville did everything in its power to beat heavily favored Bishop Hendricken on Friday night in the opening game of their best-of-three State Championship semifinal-round series at Thayer Arena.
The fourth-seeded Broncos turned in one of their best efforts of the season, an effort that saw them play a penalty-free game with the regular-season champs and match their physical play and defensive prowess, but in the end, the hosts took advantage of a couple of breaks to come out on top, 4-2.

Tying it all together: Pawtucket's LaBranche instrumental in bringing 'Elite Eight' games to PC's Alumni Hall

March 2, 2012

PROVIDENCE — In the person of Carl LaBranche, the R.I. Interscholastic League and Providence College benefited from having an ace in the hole.
The underlying reason why PC’s venerable Alumni Hall gym is the site for Sunday’s “Elite Eight” round of the open state tournament is due to the communication and negotiating skills tapped by LaBranche in harmonizing this project. With this Pawtucket native (Tolman High School Class of 1970) serving as the point man, LaBranche’s vision of opening Alumni Hall’s doors to the state’s high school basketball sector became a reality.
