OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Me. — The R.I. American Legion Senior Division champs from Navigant Credit Union/Fairmount Post 85 picked the wrong time to play kick the can.
Navigant committed six errors that led to three runs for the opposition in a disheartening 4-1 setback to Portland, Me. Thursday in the opening game of the double-elimination Northeast Regional tournament at The Ballpark.
Post 85 will look to remain alive when it faces Essex, Vt. Friday at 9:30 a.m.
PAWTUCKET — Andrew Bailey doesn’t know when he may return to the Boston Red Sox, but he’s more than anxious to do so.
In Pawtucket’s 6-3 loss to the Syracuse Chiefs at McCoy Stadium on Thursday afternoon, Bailey relieved starter Billy Buckner in the sixth inning and allowed just one hit (without a walk and fanned a pair in his one-frame stint.
That, coupled with a solid outing the night before when he hurled one inning of flawless ball (with a strikeout), the 28-year-old from Cherry Hills, N.J. likes how he’s feeling.
PAWTUCKET – On his first official day as a member of the Pawtucket Red Sox, Danny Valencia found himself out of Wednesday’s starting lineup. His placement under the “extra hitters” portion of the lineup card only furthers the argument that it’s going to be tough for the 27-year-old to carve out regular playing time.
Valencia is a third baseman by trade, a position where he’s logged 2,281 innings in 262 big-league games. Coming over from the Minnesota Twins via trade on Sunday, Valencia joins a PawSox ballclub that's pretty well stocked at the hot corner.
WOONSOCKET — Less than 48 hours after stunning the McCarthy Field crowds by earning the R.I. American Legion Baseball Tournament championship as the eighth seed, Navigant Post 85 co-coaches Buster Perrault and Jim Gauthier chose to conduct a low-key, elective practice at Renaud Field on Tuesday afternoon.
The skippers did so to ready their troops for the Northeast Regional American Legion Tournament, a double-elimination event slated to begin Thursday at The Ballpark in Old Orchard Beach, Me.
Tuesday may have been a rare day off for the PawSox, yet the baseball chatter never ceases …
For the point of this exercise, let’s start with the definition of the word “manage” – to bring about or succeed in accomplishing, sometimes despite difficulty or hardship.
Or to take charge or care of represents another form of usage. Or, finally, someone in a position to manage conducts business by the following means – to handle, direct, govern or control in action or use.
WEST WARWICK – Shortstop Will Andino just couldn't stop staring at the prize.
The Woonsocket High junior-to-be stood in front of home plate at McCarthy Field late Sunday afternoon embracing the Anthony J. Lombardi, Jr. Trophy, one given to the Rhode Island American Legion Tournament champion, and spinning the baseball attached to it.
Nights like the one that transpired at McCoy Stadium Saturday night don’t come around too often …
PAWTUCKET — As much as he enjoyed his two-year stint with the Pawtucket Red Sox, Wade Boggs wanted no part of the Triple-A ball club upon reaching the parent team in 1982.
Any ballplayer will tell you that his goal is not just to make the majors, but to make it and stay there, leaving the minor leagues in their rear-view mirror for good. When Boggs’ promotion came after almost six years in the minors, he felt he had learned everything he needed to begin his big-league career.
WEST WARWICK — Navigant Credit Union Post 85 will try to become the first eighth seed in the state tournament in recent memory to capture a R.I. championship this afternoon when the Woonsocket-based squad clashes with fourth-seeded Senerchia Post 74 at McCarthy Stadium.
Navigant earned the right to play for the title on Saturday afternoon by posting a 6-2 victory over New England Frozen Lemonade/Shields Post 43 in the losers’ bracket finale back at the West Warwick complex.
WEST WARWICK --- If Navigant Credit Union plans to win the first state championship by a Woonsocket-based ballclub in 23 years, it will need to play some of its best baseball over these next 48 hours and produce three victories over the next two days.
Eighth-seeded Navigant’s marvelous drive through the state playoffs, which featured four straight wins and included victories over the tournament’s No. 1 and 3 seeds, hit a speed bump on Friday night in Post 85’s winners’ bracket final against fourth-seeded Senerchia Post 74 at McCarthy Field.
PAWTUCKET — You really have to reach a certain age before taking part in some deep-rooted retrospection. Trying to size up life’s journey along the way is simply too tall an order, not to mention how distracting it can be from the pursuit of reaching what each individual interprets as the zenith.
