BURRILLVILLE — Shortly after head coach Katie Dutch had shot a few team photos Monday afternoon, members of the Burrillville High varsity cheerleading squad sat near the mid-court stripe of the school's domed gymnasium doing what most girls revel in – joking around, talking about boys, etc.
Senior Morgan Ferschke, however, reflected upon a truly stellar season, one which culminated in the capture of the R.I. Cheerleading Coaches Association's Non-League Varsity Division state championship, that achieved on Sunday, March 4 at Portsmouth High School.

PROVIDENCE — Minutes after Mount St. Charles dropped a 5-2 decision to rival Hendricken High in a game that would have delivered to the Mounties their 43rd state title in school history, mentor Bill Belisle stood in a corner of his bench area accepting congratulations from folks of all ages.
When someone asked how proud he was of the players he and son Dave Belisle coach, the very images of Mount hockey since the mid-1970s, just smiled and nodded.
PROVIDENCE — The drive for five ran out of gas.
Mount St. Charles’s bid for a fifth straight state crown and 43rd in its storied history came up short on Monday night in Game 3 of its best-of-three State Championship series with Bishop Hendricken.
The Hawks, who had lost to the Mounties in three of the last four title series, were finally able to take home a championship at their rival’s expense before a full house at Providence College’s Schneider Arena by grabbing a 5-2 win.
Joe Gardner’s return to the super middleweight ranks was a triumphant one.
The Woonsocket Boxing Club veteran, who went 0-3 as a light heavyweight a year ago, returned to the win column in his old weight class this past weekend on Big Six Entertainment’s ‘Who’s Next?’ card at the R.I. Convention Center in Providence.
Gardner seized an all-Blackstone Valley showdown with Pawtucket’s Rameil Shelton by claiming a four-round unanimous-decision victory by scores of 40-36, 39-37, and 39-37.

You read and hear the names of highly visible, sought-after recruits only to see later in the same sentence that Ed Cooley is right there in the trenches, making inroads with the Jakarr Sampsons of the world.
Even her simplest of motions had become a tall order. No matter that she was gingerly pressing her feet against the hardwood – Brooke Coderre’s “dogs” were barking loudly and incessantly, begging her not to continue.

PROVIDENCE -- There will be a Game 3.
Mount St. Charles forced a third and deciding game in its best-of-three State Championship title series with Bishop Hendricken on Saturday night before another large crowd at Providence College’s Schneider Arena.
Steve Donahue’s goal 1:12 into the third period and goalie Brian Larence’s spectacular 34-save effort were the differences in the Mounties’ crucial 3-2 win that kept their quest for a fifth straight state title (and 43rd in the team’s storied history) alive.
CUMBERLAND — Now that he's decided where he will attend college, Cumberland High senior pitcher Justin Patrick – a 6-5, 205-pound righty – just wants to focus on the next task at hand: Helping the Clippers to an outstanding Division I-North campaign and securing a playoff berth later this spring.
“I personally think we can get to states this year,” Patrick stated Thursday afternoon as he relaxed inside the school's Wellness Center. “The last couple of years, we played OK as a team, but I don't feel we reached our potential.

PROVIDENCE — This time, overtime was not Mount St. Charles’s time to shine.
For the past five postseasons, overtime had belonged to the Mounties, who won eight straight OT contests during that stretch, but on Friday night, they saw that run come to a bitter end in the opening game of their best-of-three State Championship title series with Bishop Hendricken.

WOONSOCKET --- This year has been a tale of two seasons for Mount St. Charles.
The first season was not a very good one by the program’s standards. Back-to-back losses to La Salle in early December and a 3-4 record in January did not sit well with the team’s loyal fan base, even though Mount was entering the season with one of its youngest teams in several seasons.
