Friars look to defy basketball critics this year

November 9, 2012

PROVIDENCE — There was a time last spring and summer when Providence Friar fans were salivating at the promise surrounding the 2012-13 season. A highly-touted recruiting class coupled with a group of noteworthy holdovers seemed to signal clearance for takeoff in Ed Cooley’s second year, giving off an aura that for the first time in a long while, Providence was a program on an up swing.

Behind enemy lines: Coaches size up area Division II football playoff participants

November 8, 2012

Dino Campopiano and his Shea High gridders won’t get another crack at Cumberland or St. Raphael this season.
Conversely, if Brian Cote’s Mount Hope squad were to cross paths with Woonsocket once again, such a matchup wouldn’t take place until the Division II Super Bowl.

Mounties hang tough before falling to Oakers in Division I volleyball semifinals

November 7, 2012

KINGSTON --- After handing Mount St. Charles its most lopsided defeat of the regular season, Coventry found a way to deal the Mounties an agonizingly close loss on Wednesday night in the Division I semifinals.
Owners of a 14-13 lead in a back-and-forth fifth and deciding game, the Mounties were unable to tally the magical 15th point that would have sent them to Saturday’s 5 p.m. championship match back at URI’s Keaney Gym.

Unbeaten Burrillville claims Div. II field hockey title

November 5, 2012

BRISTOL — When Burrillville High senior tri-captain Laura Hauser went home after school to grab her uniform Monday afternoon, there was a strange addition next to her jersey, laying right there on her bed.
“It was about 2:30, and I found a lucky penny, with the head up,” she explained. “My mom said she didn't have any idea how it got there. I almost walked out of the house without it; I got to my car, then forgot I didn't have it, so I turned around and raced back to get it.
“I mean, I'm a superstitious person,” she added.

For the eight football teams that succeeded in qualifying for the Division II postseason, the objective is crystal clear – survive to play the Tuesday following Thanksgiving.
Of the three local participants, only one team is guaranteed a coveted spot in the semifinals. Woonsocket and St. Raphael will lock helmets in a quarterfinal-round clash at Pariseau Field come 6 o’clock Saturday night. Meanwhile, Cumberland rolls out the welcome mat for Westerly, which ventures to Tucker Field Friday.

Field hockey Broncos outlast Clippers in Triple OT, earn berth in Division II finals

November 3, 2012

EAST GREENWICH — Throughout the three overtime periods, Burrillville High senior tri-captain Alex LeClair stood in her goalie box physically shaking, not from Saturday evening's chill but from the fear of … dare we say it? Failure.
“I was physically and mentally exhausted, but all of that went away when it finally ended,” she grinned.

Football Novans take down Oakers, secure spot in Division II playoffs

November 3, 2012

WOONSOCKET — What makes the 2012 edition of Woonsocket High so unique is that Carnell Henderson’s Villa Novans have learned to win games in all kinds of ways.
There have been blowouts, close shaves and other instances when the Villa Novans took the field minus a full compliment of healthy bodies. Other times, Woonsocket has been its own worst enemy, turning the ball over at an alarming rate.
That, in turn, allowed the opposition to hang out, a storyline that unfolded before the Novans’ eyes Saturday afternoon at Barry Field.

PROVIDENCE – The idea of framing Saturday’s first-ever hoops get-together between Providence College and Rhode Island College as merely an exhibition game doesn’t paint a complete picture.
