Cumberland boys close out Shea for hoop win

February 5, 2013

CUMBERLAND — When the game got down to crunchtime, Tom Lazaras, Ben Bradley and the rest of the Cumberland High squad put on a clinic on how to close games out.
Protecting a 60-54 lead with 3:11 remaining, Cumberland put down the clamps defensively to secure a well-earned 71-57 triumph against Shea High on Tuesday night at Wellness Center. The Raiders had managed to within striking for much of this Division II contest featuring two division leaders. Then came the game’s most important stretch, which saw the Raiders miss 11 consecutive field-goal attempts and 13-of-14.

Northmen improve to 18-0, down Warwick Vets

NORTH SMITHFIELD — Head coach T.J. Ciolfi claimed to be less than ecstatic after his North Smithfield High squad, with a notable edge in height, allowed under-.500 Warwick Vets to manufacture a 9-0 run at the end of the initial half to slice a 13-point deficit to 39-33.
He had wanted more efficient board work from senior tri-captain/center Matt Walkow and junior forward Peter Keenan.
“Matt and Pete got an earful at intermission,” Ciolfi confessed. “I felt that with our size advantage, we should’ve started the game with more rebounds.”
