Hawks deal Clippers first wrestling loss in five years

February 14, 2013

WARWICK — It was supposed to be a wild free-for-all, unbeaten Cumberland High battling flawless Bishop Hendricken for bragging rights in the state's top division.
Instead, the Hawks strung together seven straight triumphs between 160 pounds and 106 to sail to a stellar 47-9 dual-meet beatdown of the Clippers at the hosts' gymnasium on Thursday night.

Cumberland's Kent, Bauer seek glory at state meets

February 14, 2013

CUMBERLAND — Heidi Josephson is well aware her Cumberland High squads have little to no chance to compete for state crowns at the R.I. Interscholastic Swimming Championships, slated for the new Brown University natatorium on Saturday at 2 p.m. (for girls) and Sunday at 1 (boys).
That doesn't mean the veteran coach isn't truly excited about what could happen when the starter's gun sounds for the first event.

Cumberland can't clinch division title, falls to N.P.

NORTH PROVIDENCE --- In a contest full of high energy and emotion, not to mention a chance to earn sole possession of the Division II-North regular-season championship, Cumberland did the unthinkable on Wednesday night and went a full six minutes without producing a point early in the second half of its showdown against North Providence.
The Clippers’ cold spell enabled the host Cougars to erase a two-point deficit and rattle off 14 straight points, and that enabled them to keep Cumberland within an arm’s length of them the rest of the way and come away with a hard-fought 66-58 victory.

Kent’s clutch trey lifts Northmen past Patriots

February 13, 2013

NORTH SMITHFIELD — Davies Tech came ridiculously close to achieving the impossible on Wednesday night.
Its host, North Smithfield High, had taken a 26-26 halftime stalemate into the locker room, then assembled a remarkable 14-0 flurry in the span of 6:07 to start the final stanza to snatch a 40-26 cushion.
Slowly, the gamey Patriots fought back, and actually held a 51-49 lead with just 8.8 ticks left in regulation – and with senior tri-captain Rosaliz Torres on the foul line.

Mounties come up short against Lions in girls' hoops

February 12, 2013

WOONSOCKET — Mount St. Charles head coach Jessica Shiel would have liked to celebrate a pair of triumphs on Tuesday night.
First, she hoped her squad would pull out a win over Division II-North foe Lincoln, then turn her attention to how much money the Mounties had raised during its first ever “Pink-Out” contest, with all proceeds from the gate and T-shirt sales going directly to the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Ex-Novans hoop star L'Heureux shines for Northmen

February 10, 2013

NORTH SMITHFIELD — Never once did Matt Walkow have cause to mince words. When you’ve been friends with someone for a long time, the direct approach works just fine.
On the occasions when Walkow crossed paths with Cody L’Heureux during the three years leading up to the pair’s senior year at North Smithfield High, the conversation often drifted back to “the good old days” of middle school basketball in the same town. The hopes of creating additional on-court memories at the high school level were temporarily cast aside when L’Heureux moved to Woonsocket following eighth grade.

Cumberland's Bauer excelling in pool

February 9, 2013

CUMBERLAND — There are swimmers out there who belong to a USA Swimming, Inc.-affiliated club who either choose not to compete on the high school level or are told by their coaches they shouldn’t.
In these parts, they make those decisions for this reason: Meets such as the New England Senior Championships or the regional Age Group equivalent, always mere days after “high school states,” are deemed much more critical because it’s the road most traveled to qualify for more visible national events.

February 7, 2013

PAWTUCKET — St. Raphael Academy head coach Tom Sorrentine closed his post-game interview this way: “We've had trouble with size inside all year long, and that's got to change.”
Minutes before, Sorrentine watched as Woonsocket High big men Gare Lyles and Piotr Linek tore down rebound after rebound in their Division I-North clash at Alumni Hall on Thursday night.
In the end, however, the Saints overcame that height, utilized an 11-5 surge in the span of 6:59 late in the final stanza and garnered a 57-49 victory before about 150 fans.

Cumberland's Baxter signs LOI with nearby Bryant

February 6, 2013

With his heart and mind firmly made up about joining the Bryant University football family, Baxter faxed in his National Letter of Intent to the NCAA Division I FCS member. A senior who played a key role in the Clippers capturing the Division II Super Bowl this past fall, Baxter had also considered Assumption (Mass.) College, Southern Connecticut State, West Virginia’s Fairmont State University and Plymouth (N.H.) State.
