A long MLB journey for PC alum McDonald

September 29, 2013

Hendricken Field, the official name of the onetime campus venue for Providence College baseball, no longer has a spacious, perfectly trimmed lawn. In its stead is an outdoor track and field complex that stands on the threshold of completion.

Diamond Hill Challenge obstacle run takes place October 19, benefits Cumberland youth programs

September 29, 2013

CUMBERLAND --- Ever since organizations such as Spartan Race, Tough Mudder, and Warrior Dash burst onto the scene in 2010, obstacle racing has become the rage and the ‘to-do’ activity for runners and non-athletes alike in this country and overseas.

Runners would try to complete a race – from your average 5K to a marathon – on a trail course that has its share of mud, ponds, and rocks and is littered with obstacles, ranging from climbing over walls to crossing balance beams, crawling under barbed wire, and jumping over fire pits.

North Smithfield falls to Exeter/West Greenwich

September 28, 2013

WEST GREENWICH — North Smithfield High chief Wes Pennington just doesn't understand the reason why.
“It seems like whenever we come down here, we lose,” he stated after his squad had dropped a disgruntling, mistake-prone 17-14 defeat to Exeter/West Greenwich in a battle of unbeaten Division IV clubs on Saturday afternoon. “Maybe it's the ride down, I don't know, but I'll bet we haven't won here in over 10 years.”

Kilties dazzle in Broncos' first night game at home

September 28, 2013

BURRILLVILLE --- Burrillville had the energy of playing its first-ever night game at home under the glow of portable lights, an enthusiastic standing-room-only crowd at Alumni Field on hand to witness the historic night, and the drive to produce the team’s first 3-0 start in a decade.
But Mount Pleasant had speed to burn, lots of athleticism, and a penchant for breaking off big plays, and the Kilties put all that together on Friday to produce a lopsided victory.

Woonsocket wrecks Warwick Vets, 27-0

September 27, 2013

WARWICK – Once Woonsocket High kicked it into high gear, there was no looking back.

Shaking off a slow start with authority, the Villa Novans ran roughshod over host Warwick Vets, 27-0, Friday night to improve to 3-0 overall, 2-0 in Division II-A. Quarterback Miguel Raymond completed 11 passes for 163 yards and two scores while Woonsocket’s defense turned Warwick over five times.

Woonsocket compiled all of its points in the second and third quarters. On the flip side, Warwick Vets was barely heard from after failing to cash in on two first-half trips inside the Novans’ 10-yard line.

Friday Night De-light on tap at Burrillville's Alumni Field

September 26, 2013

BURRILLVILLE — There’s a unique buzz around this tight-knit community this week, and with good reason. Rare is the occasion when Alumni Field is transformed into a nighttime operation.

With an intriguing early-season Division III matchup serving as the centerpiece of what figures to be a unique and special day in the long, rich history of the Burrillville High football program, it seems appropriate to at long last proclaim the following: “Friday Night Lights” has come to the campus located just down the road from the Route 102 and East Avenue intersection.

Woonsocket plays well in field hockey loss to S.K.

September 25, 2013

WOONSOCKET --- In a season where wins have been difficult to come by, Woonsocket had its share of highlights in its Division I crossover affair against South Kingstown at Barry Field.
Topping that list was the fact that the Villa Novans, after getting shut out in their first six games of the season, finally found the back of the net – not once, but twice.
The Villa Novans also kept play in the Rebels’ end of the field through the better part of the end of the second half, and they played hard right to the final whistle as if they were competing in a one-goal game.

Exciting cross country finish as Clippers' Laverty edges Broncos' Dumais

September 24, 2013

CUMBERLAND – The story Tuesday afternoon at the Monastery wasn’t so much whether host Cumberland High would sweep its Northern Division tri-meet against other local foes.

They did, and then some.

Instead, it revolved around a rivalry that began last year. That is, how would Clipper sophomore Amy Laverty perform against junior Betsy Dumais, one of Burrillville’s top harriers over the past decade or more.

Laverty captured this particular outing, outhustling Dumais to the finish line with a stellar 3.1-mile clocking of 19:50. She edged the runner-up Bronco by a mere four ticks.

PawSox vets were key to Boston’s A.L. East flag

September 23, 2013

BOSTON – Gary DiSarcina and Rich Sauveur thought they were positioned well out of harm’s way. Perched in a far corner inside the champagne-soaked, music-blaring, jolly-good-time party scene that was the Red Sox’ clubhouse following last Friday’s division clincher, the two Pawtucket Red Sox coaches were more than content to be innocent bystanders.

But what soon followed was a moment that could very well summarize the impact that DiSarcina, Sauveur and the rest of the 2013 PawSox had on the newly minted American League East champs.

Woonsocket's Nared prepares for second hoops season overseas

September 22, 2013

Even on the phone, the unbridled enthusiasm in Tyrone Nared’s voice was readily apparent.

A new basketball season on foreign soil beckons for this Woonsocket native, and judging by the synopsis Nared provided mere hours before embarking on a near 15-hour flight that would take him to his roundball address for the next several months, the outlook appears bright.
