Broncos forced to settle for 1-1 draw with Spartans

October 9, 2013

BURRILLVILLE --- After 10 games, there’s little question that Burrillville’s defense and midfield both rank among the very finest in the Division III ranks this season.

A few goals scored here and there, and the Broncos would probably be perched near the top of the standings as well.

Unfortunately for the Broncos, who came into the day yielding the fewest goals in the entire division, they remain in eighth place in the 16-team league, courtesy of a hard-fought 1-1 stalemate with sixth-place Scituate on Wednesday afternoon at Gledhill Field.

Smithfield outduels Cumberland, but Clippers' Laverty snags individual cross country title

October 8, 2013

SMITHFIELD – More than anything, Cumberland High sophomore Amy Laverty wanted to team with her harrier friends and upset fellow powerhouse Smithfield to claim a most elusive Northern Division championship.

The Sentinels, however, provided too much depth in this “Battle of Unbeatens,” and closed the season with a perfect 11-0 mark after edging the gutsy Clippers, 24-34, at Deerfield Park on Tuesday afternoon.

Mounties stop slide: Charland, Rein help MSC down Titans, 3-1

October 7, 2013

WOONSOCKET -- It’s been a rather dismal experience for Mount St. Charles head coach Josh D’Abate over the past two weeks.

The Mounties had suffered three straight Division I crossover losses, and they weren’t pretty. After dropping a 3-1 verdict to South Kingstown, they were dealt two shutouts by Coventry and North Kingstown.

“I just thought it was experience,” or lack of it, D’Abate stated. “We graduated six starters last year, and we brought some athletics girls back, but they didn’t have the amount of playing time the (seniors) did.”

Still business as usual for Red Sox' McDonald, Lavarnway

October 6, 2013

BOSTON – The sight of Jonny Gomes taking swings in the same batting-practice group as Ryan Lavarnway before Game Two of the American League Division Series provided some easy dots to connect.

As if the lines of symmetry weren’t clearly marked already, John McDonald jumped in the cage immediately after Gomes, Lavarnway and the rest of their pregame swing partners cleared out.

Novans on a roll: Woonsocket’s D keys fourth straight win in 12-7 defeat of Westerly

October 5, 2013

WOONSOCKET – On a Saturday afternoon when Woonsocket High could get little going offensively – excepting a pair of monumental, game-changing, first-half plays – head coach Carnell Henderson pretty much knew he'd need to rely on his defense to achieve a successful outcome.

Going elsewhere: Clippers will meet Saints on Saturday night at Pawtucket's Max Read Field

October 4, 2013

CUMBERLAND – Saturday night’s Division II-B football contest between Cumberland and St. Raphael is still scheduled to kick off at 7 o’clock.

The location, however, has changed.

Thanks to Friday’s rainstorm shutting down operations on the track surface at Tucker Field, Cumberland officials found themselves in a precarious position, that of scrambling to find a last-minute venue that would still allow the game to take place on its rescheduled night. Their wishes didn’t go unanswered for long, as Pawtucket’s Max Read Field will now serve as the Clippers’ “home field” against the Saints.

Cumberland-SRA football game is pushed to Saturday as Tucker Field project nears completion

October 3, 2013

CUMBERLAND – One more day – at least that’s the hope that the Cumberland High football team will be allowed to hit its home turf for an intriguing Division II-B contest against St. Raphael Academy.

With the track portion of Tucker Field still in the final phase of completion, school officials decided to push the Cumberland-SRA matchup ahead a day, moving it from Friday night to Saturday night. Kickoff remains at 7 p.m.

Soukhamthath, Chattelle take center stage in tonight's CES MMA show at Twin River Event Center

October 3, 2013

LINCOLN — Raise your hand if you can name the two winningest fighters in the three-year history of Classic Entertainment & Sports’ mixed martial arts division.
If you can name Pawtucket middleweight Todd Chattelle and Woonsocket bantamweight Andre Soukhamthath, you can go to the head to the class.
Both fighters, who train out of Tri-Force MMA in Pawtucket, have won a record five times under the CES colors, and they will look to continue their winning ways tonight at the Twin River Event Center.

Ross’ big day, Broncos’ ‘D’ fuel win over Northmen

October 3, 2013

BURRILLVILLE — Even before North Smithfield High faced Division II foe and regional rival Burrillville on Thursday afternoon, head coach Jeremy Sherer worried about how his young players would fare against a more experienced squadron.
Turns out, he had reason for concern: The Broncos took advantage of a goal and two assists from senior co-captain Taylor Ross while playing superlative defense throughout to nail down a 3-0 triumph over the Northmen at Gledhill Field.

After injury-plagued freshman year, PC's Dunn enters basketball season fully healthy

October 1, 2013

PROVIDENCE — Ask New London High head basketball coach Craig Parker about the summertime impression made by former player Kris Dunn and you will elicit a response that figures to warm the hearts of Providence College followers.

“A few things stood out to me. He was definitely stronger and his attitude was really upbeat about the upcoming season,” Parker expressed when reached Tuesday. “I think going into this season relatively injury-free as opposed to last year, he’s washed his hands of that so he can be the point guard up at Providence.”
