Life as a backup catcher suits Boston's Ross fine

August 15, 2013

PAWTUCKET — There’s light at the end of the tunnel as far as David Ross and his minor-league rehab assignment is concerned.

The veteran catcher is scheduled to be behind the plate for back-to-back nine-inning games for the PawSox on Friday and Saturday before visiting concussion specialist Dr. Micky Collins on Sunday.
If everything checks out accordingly, Ross would rejoin the Red Sox Monday night in San Francisco.

SportsBusiness Journal drops Providence/Pawtucket minor-league market nine spots to No. 12 this year

August 14, 2013

PAWTUCKET – Every two years, Smith & Street’s SportsBusiness Journal releases its annual rankings of the top minor-league markets in the country.

According to the publication’s 2013 findings that were unveiled earlier this week, the Providence/Pawtucket market weighed in at a solid 12th out of the 229 markets that were scrutinized and taken under advisement. Two cities that are home to International League clubs finished 1-2 in this year’s compellation with Toledo, Ohio grabbing top honors followed by Rochester, N.Y., which boasts four minor-league operations.

PawSox down Louisville, 6-5, for fourth straight win

August 14, 2013

PAWTUCKET --- It’s been more than a month-and-a-half since the Pawtucket Red Sox strung together four wins in a row, but on Wednesday afternoon, they were able to extend their win streak at the expense of the Louisville Bats.
Three-run homers from Xander Bogaerts and Mark Hamilton and a strong start from Clayton Mortensen enabled the defending International League champions to hold off a seventh-inning rally by the Bats and come away with a 6-5 win at McCoy Stadium.

DiSarcina: Middlebrooks 'has a lot to prove' in his return to Boston 'and he knows it'

August 13, 2013

PAWTUCKET – There are two schools of thought regarding Will Middlebrooks and the third baseman’s recent return to major-league duty.

Given the Red Sox were receiving zero in the way of offensive production at the hot corner following the departure of Jose Iglesias – the post-July 31 non-waiver trading deadline saw Brock Holt and Brandon Snyder struggling to the tune of a combined .135 batting average (5-for-37) – the ball club was more than justified in being in the market for an upgrade.

Lincoln Little Leaguers have much to be proud of

August 11, 2013

PAWTUCKET – As Lincoln All-Stars' manager Matt Netto drove the 125-plus miles home to Central Falls from Bristol, Conn. late Saturday night, dozens upon dozens of “What ifs?” flooded his mind – how an extra-base hit with Braedon Carney on first with no one out in the third could've changed matters; how Patrick Gribbin could've scored after beating out a perfect bunt with two down in the fifth; how similar this defeat was to the one Lincoln suffered in this same scenario four years before.

Navigant Post 85 forced to play waiting game at Northeast Regionals

August 9, 2013

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — It turned out to be a long Friday morning and afternoon for Navigant Post 85.

Co-managers Buster Perrault and Jim Gauthier and their players desperately wanted to take on Rochester, N.H., here at the American Legion Northeast Regional Senior Division Tournament, for one very simple reason: They longed to post their first victory after sustaining a 9-2 loss to Barnstable, Mass. in their opener on Thursday.
Post 85, however, had to wait – and wait some more.

Lincoln now one win away from LLWS

August 8, 2013

BRISTOL, Conn. – It had been billed as a sensational pitcher’s duel – South Burlington, Vt. fireballer Ben Tate against Lincoln’s crafty southpaw Kyle Marrapese.

The pair didn’t disappoint, as they combined to whiff – get this – 19 foes.

In the end, however, Marrapese captured the battle, and it happened due to one precious, hellacious swing from teammate Steve Andrews.

Navigant Post 85 falls in Northeast regional opener

August 8, 2013

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — Navigant Post 85 produced several opportunities to capture its U.S. American Legion Northeast Regional Tournament opener at Palmer Field on Thursday morning.

It failed on most, and that’s why the Rhode Island champions suffered a lopsided 9-2 defeat to Barnstable, Mass.

For those who reigned from the Bay State, George Bent hurled a complete-game nine-hitter while his offense “nickel-and-dimed” their way to eight runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth frames.
Righty starter Kory “Skip” Lawrence took the loss after yielding six hits in four-plus innings.
