Lincoln crushes N.H.; rematch with Vermont on tap

August 7, 2013

BRISTOL, Conn. — As soon as Little League New England Regional Tournament officials asked the Lincoln All-Stars to walk to home plate to greet “Dugout,” the event’s mascot, Aaron DeSousa knew what was coming
.
Together with foe Rye, N.H., they performed the dance accompanying the tune prior to their contest, and it looked like they had a blast doing it.

“I remember other teams doing that from years before, when I was watching on TV,” DeSousa said. “I kind of expected it once they called us over. While we were dancing, it took all the butterflies away. I just didn’t feel as nervous.”

Navigant Post 85 eyes strong showing at American Legion Northeast Regionals

August 6, 2013

WOONSOCKET — Navigant Post 85 co-coaches Buster Perrault and Jim Gauthier had been set to retire last year from the everyday grind of not only mentoring their players, but making sure they all (or as many as possible) could attend necessary practice sessions and contests.

Another chore: Rounding up enough sponsors to pitch in – ponder the pun – and make sure they had enough funds to uniform the entire roster, purchase baseballs and necessary equipment, etc.

Patriots' Mallett has faith in childhood chum Middlebrooks

August 6, 2013

FOXBORO — This is the time of year when the conversations between Texas childhood pals Will Middlebrooks and Ryan Mallett slow to a crawl.

On the surface, it’s perfectly understandable.

Middlebrooks’ baseball duties are in full bloom with two or possibly three months in his season remaining. With Mallett, the dog days of summer represent a hectic time, with practices and intra-squad scrimmages going hand in hand with film sessions and preseason football contests.

Bobby Doyle Summer Classic scheduled for next Sunday in Narragansett

August 5, 2013

SEEKONK — At the annual Arnold Mills Road Race in Cumberland on Fourth of July morning, former St. Raphael Academy and current Hendricken High coaching icon Jimmy Doyle was plenty busy taking mile splits of nephews Brian and Connor.

And for good reason: He wanted to know just how fast his late brother’s kids were running.

They didn’t disappoint, as 20-year-old Brian captured the Open Division title with a four-mile clocking of 21:07, and kid brother Connor, 18, took third in 21:26.

Lincoln Little League suffers first loss at New Englands

August 5, 2013

BRISTOL, Conn. — Lincoln All-Stars’ assistant coach Marty Gaughan Sr. had a feeling his team would face South Burlington, Vt. ace Sammy Premsagar in the third game of this Little League New England Regional Tournament on Monday afternoon.

That’s why he took all necessary measures to prepare the kids offensively.

“They say he’s a real fireballer; that’s why I just spent the last hour pitching batting practice to them,” he said perhaps 40 minutes before the tilt. “I was throwing them 100-mph heaters so they’d be ready.”

Lincoln Little League improves to 2-0 in New England regionals

August 4, 2013

BRISTOL, Conn. — Thankfully for Lincoln Little League, Brandon Lee is just one player.

The No. 3 hitter in Newton South East’s lineup certainly did some damage Sunday, slugging two home runs with four RBI and two runs scored. Collectively, Lincoln was able to overcome the Herculean effort and knock off the Massachusetts representative. 14-8, in the second game round-robin play of the Little League New England Regional Tournament.

Both squads ended up spraying the ball all over Leon J. Breen Field, tallying 22 runs and 25 hits, including 10 extra base hits.

PawSox loaded with major league-caliber bullpen options

August 4, 2013

PAWTUCKET — Sometimes the trades that a major-league ballclub doesn’t end up making can prove quite revealing.

The Jake Peavy acquisition was not the only smoke signal sent out by the Red Sox at the July 31 non-waiver trading deadline. Last Wednesday’s 4 p.m Eastern Time deadline did not feature the acquisition of a warm body for the sole purpose of augmenting the bullpen core that manager John Farrell presently has at his disposal.

Navigant Post 85 repeats as R.I. American Legion champs

August 3, 2013

WEST WARWICK – As if on cue, droplets began falling from the purple-, orange- and dark gray clouds surrounding McCarthy Field just as Navigant Post 85 of Woonsocket’s leaders accepted their second straight Anthony J. Lombardi Jr. Trophy as Rhode Island’s premier American Legion team.

Still, nothing was going to rain on this parade.

PawSox' Ranaudo looks to paint a minor-league masterpiece

August 3, 2013

PAWTUCKET – Rich Sauveur can’t wait to see Anthony Ranaudo go all Pablo Picasso on the blank canvas that will represent his tenure at Triple-A Pawtucket after his promotion here on Friday.

“From what I heard, he was throwing the ball extremely well down in Portland and I can’t wait to see him throw,” stated Sauveur, Pawtucket’s pitching coach. “(Sea Dogs pitching coach Bob Kipper) sent me some information on Anthony, and I was just reading up on it. Kipper thinks that he’s an outstanding person and a great student of the game.

WEB ONLY: Navigant takes playoff duel with Upper Deck, moves two wins away from state title

August 2, 2013

WEST WARWICK -- As a light drizzle started to find its way to McCarthy Field, the tides of the American Legion ‘Final Eight’ winners’ bracket final changed on one pitch.
With Upper Deck Post 86/14 holding a 3-1 lead in the top of the sixth inning, Navigant Credit Union’s E.J. Torres stepped in the box with the bases loaded and two outs. Facing a full count, Torres blasted an opposite-field double to left field.
That hit emptied the bases and gave Navigant a 4-3 lead, one that Post 85 would improve all the way to a 12-3 final.
