Wizards' defense to test Clippers in Division II Super Bowl

December 7, 2013

WEST WARWICK – In some ways, the West Warwick squad that will serve as Cumberland’s final obstacle in the road to repeating as Division II champs looks awfully familiar.

Like the stout defense the 2012 Clippers rode en route to capturing the Super Bowl, the 2013 Wizards have proven successful in writing their own “shutting down the opposition” script. West Warwick will carry a nine-game winning streak into Sunday’s 3 p.m. title game at Cranston Stadium, an impressive stretch that has seen head coach Shane Lagor’s crew surrender 10.5 points per game.

Lions roar to 6-2 win in season opener

December 6, 2013

WARWICK --- Lincoln picked up right where it left off last winter.

Owners of a magical 23-0-1 mark and the Division II championship a season ago, the Lions kicked off their title defense on the right foot on Friday night by topping the St. Raphael/Providence Country Day/Wheeler co-op team, 6-2, in their Division II-North opener at Thayer Arena.

It was a decent start to a promising year for the Lions, who graduated seven players from last season’s team and are carrying an 18-man roster that has a return trip to the finals at Brown University atop their wish list this winter.

Friars come away with 50-49 triumph over Rams

December 5, 2013

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – That wasn’t a basketball game that took place at the Ryan Center Thursday. That was a rock fight.
Or considering the stare down at center court that Dan Hurley and Ed Cooley engaged in with 3:55 remaining – one that also contained a few verbal jabs for good measure – perhaps they should have put the basketballs away and slapped a pair of boxing gloves on the two head coaches.
Style points were definitely at a premium, but oh, what a conclusion the Friars and Rams staged.

McGair: A four-team R.I. Division I college basketball tournament? Why not?

December 5, 2013

What would it take for the state’s four Division I men’s basketball programs to get together for an in-season, round-robin tournament?

Depends on which school representative you speak with.

“Anything we could do to grow interest, whether it be a doubleheader, a tournament or anything like that, we would be all for it,” stated Brown head coach Mike Martin.

The puck drops on boys' hockey season tonight

December 5, 2013

There are three things that are certain in life -- death, taxes, and Mount St. Charles going down to the wire with Bishop Hendricken and La Salle in the battle for the Division I state championship.
That being said, expect much of the same from the three parochial schools this winter -- a long tooth-and-nail duel that will begin tonight and end in the finals sometime in mid-March at Brown University.

National spotlight shines on tonight's PC-URI clash

December 4, 2013

SOUTH KINGSTOWN — Ed Cooley has a grand vision for the state’s annual college basketball passion play – Providence versus Rhode Island.

“My goal is to get this game on CBS on a Sunday or Saturday afternoon,” proclaimed the Friars’ head coach. “When you do that, you know that both programs are getting there. Take nothing away from the other channels, and I don’t want to be disrespectful to anybody, but when you’re talking about trying to nationally brand your two schools, I think that’s our ultimate goal.”

Ellsbury's deal doesn't surprise Harper one bit

December 4, 2013

There figures to always be a soft spot in Tommy Harper’s heart for Jacoby Ellsbury. Harper got to know Ellsbury when the latter was on the fast track through the minor-league ranks, hence why the former had no trouble relinquishing his 36-year-old Red Sox record of 54 stolen bases in a single season, which Ellsbury shattered with 70 thefts in 2009.

When the topic of Ellsbury and the lavish seven-year, $153-million deal he reportedly agreed to with the New York Yankees came up during a phone interview on Wednesday, Harper elicited a response that was part clairvoyant, part reality check.

December 4, 2013

Not only is the talented Woonsocket featherweight getting ready for a tough fight that he accepted on less than three weeks’ notice, but he’s also been very busy tying up some loose ends and packing his and his family’s belongings before they move to Boca Raton, Fla. on Sunday.

December 3, 2013

WEST GREENWICH --- For the fourth straight season, North Smithfield is one and done in the Division IV playoffs.

Senior fullback Dwight Anderson scored three touchdowns and teamed with quarterback Jacob Hornoff to pick up over 180 yards on the ground to guide Exeter/West Greenwich to a 21-13 victory over N.S. on Tuesday night under the glare of portable lights on the Knights’ campus.

Northmen seek payback with Division IV Super Bowl berth on the line

December 2, 2013

NORTH SMITHFIELD – Way back on Sept. 28, North Smithfield High traveled to Exeter/West Greenwich's home gridiron and exhibited perhaps its sloppiest game of the season, but still sustained “only” a 17-14 loss.

The two will meet yet again in a R.I. Division IV Tournament semifinal in West Greenwich at 6 p.m., Tuesday, and – to prepare his troops mentally – Pennington is utilizing not just what happened in that contest but also one that occurred three years ago this same weekend.
