Walker and Keila Strick are dynamic duo for Northmen hoop squads

March 3, 2013

NORTH SMITHFIELD – While senior guard and tri-captain Walker Strick and his elated North Smithfield High teammates celebrated their first-ever state hoop championship on the Pizzitola Center floor last Sunday afternoon, head coach T.J. Ciolfi scrambled to find someone to film the happenings.
It didn't take long for him to see Keila Strick, senior tri-captain of the Northmen's girls squad. He immediately issued her his camera, and she went to work.

North Smithfield hoopsters enjoying moment in the spotlight

March 3, 2013

NORTH SMITHFIELD – Confident … but not cocky.
Cool customers … but not too cool for school.
Notoriety is a natural byproduct of winning, especially when victories are strung, out one after another, without a blemish, like a string of pearls. Yet as North Smithfield head coach T.J. Ciolfi will attest, the wave of attention for their once-in-a-lifetime season hasn’t changed his Northmen in the slightest.

WEB ONLY: Mount girls take playoff opener over Warwick co-op team; N.S. boys fall to N.K. in OT

March 2, 2013

WOONSOCKET --- Mount St. Charles avenged an ugly 4-1 defeat to the Warwick co-op team six nights ago in their regular-season finale by defeating the Warwick squad by the same score on Friday night in their State Championship playoff opener at Adelard Arena.
Elisabeth Berard scored a pair of goals in the second period to erase a 1-0 deficit and help the Mounties take Game 1 of their best-of-three semifinal-round series. The Mounties can sweep the series tonight at 7 p.m. when the series resumes at Thayer Arena.

Dulieu, Lake to the rescue for Clippers in OT win

March 1, 2013

WOONSOCKET -- Jaryd Dulieu couldn’t have picked a perfect time to score the biggest goal of his high school career.
The senior co-captain lit the lamp on a pass from Jake Salisbury 3:51 into overtime to lift the Clippers to a 3-2 triumph over the Rogers/Tiverton/Rocky Hill co-op squad on Friday night in the opening contest of their best-of-three Division II quarterfinal-round series at Adelard Arena.

Ex-PC Friars standout God Shammgod can relate to Ricky Ledo

March 1, 2013

PROVIDENCE — As if on cue, God Shammgod started talking about Ricky Ledo’s situation.
Mind you, there wasn’t a lead-in question posed to Shammgod with the intent of correlating his two-year playing stint at Providence College to the same temptations of leaving school prematurely that Ledo will deal with soon enough. Sitting in Alumni Hall’s cafeteria the other day, the conversation with the now 36-year-old Shammgod began with how much he’s enjoyed being back on PC’s campus as an undergrad student and a member of Ed Cooley’s basketball staff.

Cumberland football players key basketball team's success

February 27, 2013

CUMBERLAND — Basketball-wise, Tom Lazaras, Mitchell Baxter and Trent Vasey weren’t going to teach Ben Bradley, Dylan Boisclair, Rob Reedy and Greg Joubert anything new. Yet in order to reach the championship destination that Cumberland High’s basketball camp dropped anchor upon last weekend, the first group of Clipper triplets had to do some gardening.

Little North Smithfield hopes to make big impression in open state basketball tournament

February 26, 2013

NORTH SMITHFIELD — About 26 hours after the North Smithfield High boys' hoop squad had received its R.I. Division III championship plaque inside the Pizzitola Center, head coach T.J. Ciolfi, assistant Brian Chuey and the guys congregated with parents, family members and friends inside the Gators' Pub reception room Monday night.
The fete wasn't so much a celebration of the Northmen's first-ever state basketball crown, one achieved with a perfect, historic 24-0 mark, but instead to learn which team it would face in the 16-team R.I. Open (or all-inclusive) Tournament beginning tonight.

Shea, Cumberland, North Smithfield all land in same region for R.I. state hoops tourney

February 25, 2013

After the four, four-team regions that comprise the R.I. boys’ basketball open tournament were revealed, clever minds declared Region IV “The Blackstone Valley Invitational.”
The folks at The Prout School may feel slighted with such a bold declaration, but look at the rest of the region’s participants. Here you have two of the three division champions in Cumberland and North Smithfield along with Shea.
In other words, the moniker fits.

Unbeaten Northmen capture Div. III championship

February 24, 2013

PROVIDENCE — North Smithfield High head coach T.J. Ciolfi didn't arrive at school to take the team bus to Brown University's Pizzitola Center until approximately 1:40 p.m., Sunday.
In the interim, his Northmen hoopsters strolled around the gymnasium and locker room wondering where their chief could be. After all, they not only were about to face East Greenwich for the R.I. Division III Tournament championship, but also try to register the school's first-ever undefeated season.
Ciolfi admitted later it was all part of the plan.

Cumberland defeats Shea for Div. II hoop crown

February 24, 2013

PROVIDENCE — Winning has become contagious for Cumberland High’s athletic department, spreading from one season to the next.
With the fall producing a Super Bowl champion along with the state’s top male cross-country runner (Trevor Crawley), the pressure fell squarely on the Clippers’ winter sports’ entries to keep the good times flowing. Crawley kept up his end of the bargain when the swift 12th grader captured the 3,000-meter run at the R.I. Indoor Track & Field Championships two weekends ago.
