Lincoln's Zicuis, D'Aloisio win state wrestling titles

February 24, 2013

PROVIDENCE – Immediately after Lincoln High senior quad-captain Nik Zicuis had posted a 10-5 triumph over La Salle Academy senior John Georges in the 220-pound weight class, he hustled to the opposing coaches' corner and accepted congratulatory handshakes.
He then sprinted to the opposite side and leaped into head coach Mike Tuorto's arms; while hugging him and grinning at able assistant Anthony Turchetta, Zicuis threw his fist into the air, index finger pointing skyward.

February 21, 2013

Lady Lions fight the good fight, but Panthers prevail

February 21, 2013

BURRILLVILLE -- It looked as if Burrillville High would make the most of its Senior Night celebration after entering intermission behind Division II-North opponent North Providence by a mere five (24-19).
The Broncos opened the final stanza in style, with senior Ashley Spear canning a turnaround one-hander in the lane and classmate Emma Lapierre hitting a putback with only 2:21 expired. Actually, the tri-captain had been fouled on the bucket, and went to the charity stripe set to tie the contest for the first time at 24-all.

February 20, 2013

CUMBERLAND – The postseason may be afoot, but make no mistake: this is still the same North Smithfield power keg.
The same squad that was blemish-free during the regular season remained true to form in its playoff opener Wednesday night. Led by usual suspects Matt Walkow, Peter Keenan and Cody L’Heureux, top seed North Smithfield overwhelmed No. 9 Ponaganset, 80-42, in the Division III quarterfinals. Next up for T.J. Ciolfi & Co. is a semifinal-round matchup with No. 4 Johnston Friday at Roger Williams University.

February 19, 2013

WOONSOCKET — Highlights have been few and far between this year for Woonsocket, a young squad that has been slowly trying to rebuild its program since the Villa Novans won the Division III-North title three seasons ago.
On Tuesday afternoon, before a small, but energetic gathering at Adelard Arena, all the hard work, sweat, and tears the Villa Novans put into their season nearly paid off in the form of their first victory of the year, but Scituate spoiled their aspirations.

Clippers' Bauer wins two individual events at boys' swimming state meet

February 18, 2013

PROVIDENCE — Cumberland High senior co-captain Andrew Bauer took a specific but incredibly-optimistic plan into these R.I. Boys Swimming Championships on Monday night.
It was his lofty goal to break his own school mark in the 200-yard freestyle, then set new CHS marks at the 500 distance, not to mention the 50 and 100 freestyles.
