Hawks prove too much for hockey Broncos

January 21, 2013

BURRILLVILLE — Looking rather glum, Steve Daigle stood outside Burrillville High’s locker room at Levy Rink on Monday afternoon and sighed at what had just transpired.
“It was a disaster,” he said after his Broncos had suffered a humiliating 6-0 Division I loss to powerhouse Hendricken. “The kids just didn’t come ready to play for some unknown reason. They just didn’t have it. They didn’t come out of the gate with any kind of energy, which is something you definitely need against the privates.

Lincoln Lions taking a bite out of Division II hockey field

January 21, 2013

PAWTUCKET — Should we stay or should we go? That was the question facing Lincoln head coach Jim Riel during the offseason when the RIIL was getting ready to realign its teams for the 2012-13 campaign.
Stay in the Division I-Eccleston and the Lions would have been competitive night in and night out against the other five public schools in the division. Drop down to Division II and also face a drop in competition, but the Lions would have been one of the clear favorites in the running for a lower state championship.

McGair: Regarding Francona’s book, let’s not spoil everything

January 19, 2013

A little of this, a little of that …

Wake me when it’s Tuesday – the day Terry Francona’s juicy and highly anticipated book is scheduled to hit the shelves.
Not a moment too soon.
Look, I understand the importance of publicizing and spreading the word to the masses that there’s something on the immediate horizon that you may want to check out. The particular PR campaign for Francona’s 368-page opus has me a tad confused, however.

The victory was the fourth in a row for the Mounties, who are 5-1 in the league and face Coventry in a crossover game tonight at 8 p.m. at the West Warwick Civic Center.

Pawtucket's Goucher marks 20th season calling hockey games

January 18, 2013

Dave Goucher has been calling hockey games on the radio for much of his adult life – 20 years to be exact. Naturally, the Pawtucket native and graduate of Tolman High monitored the NHL’s labor saga, but as he expressed when contacted earlier this week, he reached a point where countless impasses between the owners and players became too much to digest.

N.S. survives 57-56 triumph over Islanders, remain unbeaten

January 18, 2013

NORTH SMITHFIELD -- With all due respect to other Division III squads with title-game aspirations, if another North Smithfield-Middletown matchup isn’t contested in the state final in March, it would be a tragedy.
This one, honestly, was that entertaining.
With 1.8 seconds left in regulation, and the Northmen trailing 50-49, it appeared senior guard Walker Strick had landed a baseline trey to lift the hosts to a thrilling, come-from-behind 52-51 victory over the Islanders.
The two officials, however, indicated the scoreboard was incorrect, and deemed an overtime session necessary.

Red Sox manager to pay visit to Daniel Bard

January 18, 2013

PROVIDENCE – When it comes to flying the friendly skies, Red Sox manager John Farrell has mapped out a travel schedule that will certainly make the time pass by a little quicker – not mention rack up frequent flyer miles.
Following his appearance at Thursday’s Red Sox-themed “Town Hall Meeting” at La Salle Academy, Farrell will hop on a plane Friday morning and head to Dallas for some face-to-face time with pitcher John Lackey. Farrell then plans to shoot over to Fort Myers on Saturday to see pitchers Felix Doubront and Franklin Morales, both of who have already reported to JetBlue Park.

Mounties skate past Eagles

January 16, 2013

KINGSTON — With its leading scorer from a season ago still sidelined with a concussion he suffered in the season opener, Mount St. Charles Academy has found itself having to rely on a cast of players this winter -- some of whom were barely on the team’s radar a year ago -- to help pick up the slack offensively.

Northmen stay perfect, survive scare from Huskies

January 16, 2013

NORTH SMITHFIELD --- If unbeaten North Smithfield was looking for the perfect test to help the Northmen prepare for Thursday night’s duel between the Division III’s other undefeated team, Middletown, the Northmen got one and then some on Tuesday night in the form of red-hot Mount Hope.
The Northmen, who entered the week capturing their seven league games by an average of 27 points, went the distance with the Huskies in a thrilling game that featured 14 lead changes, eight ties, and a boatload of three-pointers (19 of ’em, 11 by the Huskies).
