Remembering Mr. Burrillville: Skee Carter's death shocks close-knit community

January 5, 2013

BURRILLVILLE — Peter Berthelette heard his cellphone ring as he stood at a table inside Burrillville High's Senior Lounge last Wednesday. He had been conversing with baseball player Zach Lafleur and two classmates as they ate their lunches.
“I typically don't answer my cell in front of students, but when the call showed up as coming from Skee Carter, I did anyway,” Berthelette recalled. “I said, 'Hi, Skee!' and all I heard was a pause. The voice on the other end said, 'Hi, Pete. It's not Skee, it's Chris (his son). I have some bad news,' and he told me what happened.

WEB ONLY: Mount girls hold off East Bay co-op team

January 5, 2013

WOONSOCKET --- Mount St. Charles endured one of its toughest tests to date on Friday night when the East Bay (Barrington/Mount Hope/Portsmouth) co-op squad bused into Adelard Arena for a crossover affair, but the Mounties were still able to come away with a hard-fought 3-1 win.
The Mounties ran into a very hot goaltender in Sophie Faxon, who turned away 42 shots, but did all the damage they needed to do late in the first period on a pair of goals by junior Briana Castro (her 11th and 12th of the season) to net their sixth victory in seven games.

Mountie girls use depth to swim past Lions

January 3, 2013

LINCOLN — Even in the throes of defeat, there was no taming the excitement of Lincoln High sophomore Nicole Moneghan and freshman Mollie Westrick.
Even before the Lions had suffered a 56-38 Division II loss to Mount St. Charles at the MacColl YMCA natatorium on Thursday afternoon, Moneghan – still in the pool after winning the 500-yard freestyle – splashed around in her lane after receiving word from head coach Tom DiIorio she had finally broken the coveted six-minute mark.
“I did what?” she grinned.

Late turnovers doom Novans in loss to Blue Wave

January 2, 2013

WOONSOCKET -- Luis Garcia may have nailed an NBA-length trey at the buzzer, but it wasn’t enough for Woonsocket High on Wednesday night.
The Villa Novans committed 23 turnovers – including 14 in the final half – and converted just 10 of 24 from the charity stripe (41.7 percent) and ultimately dropped a 54-46 Division I crossover decision to Hope High before a crowd of perhaps 100.
After head coach Kyle Ivey-Jones’ bunch overcame a 29-22 deficit with 11:59 left in the second stanza, slicing the deficit to 34-30, Hope later mustered an 11-2 run in the span of 3:47 to seal the victory.
