Cumberland crushes Coventry in Div. II quarters, 42-7

November 15, 2013

CUMBERLAND – Blowouts in the postseason are few and far between, but on Friday night, Cumberland picked up a lopsided victory against a club that had given them difficult battles over the years.

Junior tailback Mike Stock ran for 168 yards on 24 carries, and the Clippers’ ground game received a big helping hand from its offensive line in totaling over 300 yards, controlling the clock, and paving the way for a 42-7 triumph over Coventry in their Division II quarterfinal-round affair at Tucker Field.

Northmen blast Warriors, 61-8, earn playoff berth

November 15, 2013

NORTH SMITHFIELD -- Given the fact that this was a much easier verdict than he ever thought possible, North Smithfield High head coach Wes Pennington replaced his starting backfield with underclassmen Jake Palmer and Devon Deragon.

For the diminutive Palmer, he had the time of his life, both during and after the Northmen celebrated a stunningly simplistic 61-8 Senior Night triumph over Central Falls on Friday night.

Familiar playoff foes SRA, Woonsocket to meet in Division II football quarterfinals

November 14, 2013

If last November’s riveting playoff result is any indication, the “rematch” between St. Raphael and Woonsocket in a R.I. Division II quarterfinal at Barry Field on Saturday should be a wild one.

The Villa Novans had trailed the Saints, 13-0, at the break, but rallied for 21 points in the second half, including 14 in the final quarter, to knot it at 21-21 at Pariseau Field.

In the end, SRA veteran mentor Mike Sassi’s crew took a 28-21 advantage in overtime, though Woonsocket later notched a TD to pull to within one.

Mount's Hayward inks Letter of Intent with Bryant University, will join Bulldogs' baseball team

November 13, 2013

WOONSOCKET — Nolan Hayward did his homework. He talked to a number of colleges and spent some quality time researching them and their baseball programs.

But deep down, the Mount St. Charles Academy senior knew exactly what college he wanted to attend once his high school days were over. He knew the answer before he started grade school, and there really wasn’t anything that was going to change his mind.

McGair: Local standouts deliver on RIC men's soccer team

November 13, 2013

A little of this, a little of that …

You could say there was a heavy presence of local talent on this fall’s men’s soccer program at Rhode Island College.
The roster featured three players from Pawtucket – Camilo Estrada, Anderson Monteiro and Chuck Oddih – and two from Lincoln – Emmanuel Asiedu and Alexander LaBreche. Estrada and Asiedu learned earlier this week that their efforts and contributions did not go unnoticed by their contemporaries. Both were named to the Second Team All-Little East Conference.

'Chemistry' was key ingredient to Burrillville capturing Division II girls' soccer championship

November 11, 2013

BURRILLVILLE – A few hours after Burrillville High head coach Amy Cardone awoke Monday morning, she received a text from netminder Catherine Keable, who played a pivotal role in the Broncos clinching their first state championship in 20 years, not to mention only the second in school history.
About 18 hours earlier, Cardone's crew assembled a masterful, four-goal performance over the final 40 minutes to shock top-seeded and previously-undefeated Lincoln in the R.I. Division II title tilt at Rhode Island College, but Keable's message both worried but didn't surprise her mentor.

Burrillville tops Lincoln for Division II girls' soccer crown

November 11, 2013

PROVIDENCE – The drama was just beginning when Burrillville High senior co-captain Tori Libby hugged junior defender Tiara Bianco near midfield and exclaimed, “I can't believe this! I'm so tired, but I'm so excited!”

In the interim, that tandem's teammates celebrated around her with hugs, impromptu dances and the like.
That's what happens when a team wins a game it almost certainly wasn't supposed to, but found the inner strength to move forward.

Once again, Woonsocket to face St. Raphael in Division II football quarterfinals

November 11, 2013

Last year, Woonsocket and St. Raphael staged a thrilling Division II quarterfinal-round playoff contest. A touchdown produced in the waning seconds of regulation enabled the Saints to force overtime, this after the Novans held a 21-13 advantage with just 90 seconds remaining.

West Warwick earns top seed in Div. II playoffs with 14-0 win over Cumberland; Clippers cop No. 2 berth

November 9, 2013

CUMBERLAND -- Cumberland needed to bring out its best football against a formidable opponent on Friday night if it wanted to repeat as Division II-B champions and earn the league’s top seed in the upcoming playoffs.
But instead of bringing out their best, the Clippers did the complete opposite against West Warwick and paid the price.
