Dufner headlines exceptional field for ‘Sweet 16’ edition of CVS Caremark Charity Classic

May 13, 2014

SMITHFIELD — For golf enthusiasts who remember Jason Dufner’s blistering performance on his way to capturing the 2013 PGA Championship, they know that the Auburn University product is a man of few words. He will respond to someone who acknowledges him with a polite nod, but don’t expect much more.

N.S. takes battle of D-II softball unbeatens with E.G.

May 9, 2014

NORTH SMITHFIELD — This marquee clash of 11-0 teams certainly lived up to its lofty expectations.
North Smithfield scored three times in the bottom of the third inning and received an excellent outing from its senior ace pitcher, Karissa Carlton, to defeat East Greenwich, 4-3, on Friday afternoon before a large gathering on the Northmen’s campus.

PawSox knuckleball pitcher Wright working his way back from sports hernia surgery

May 9, 2014

PAWTUCKET — As a knuckleball pitcher, Steven Wright can get loose in a hurry.

As a 29-year-old man who is three months removed from undergoing surgery to repair a sports hernia, the importance of taking things slow and steady cannot be understated.

From his vantage point, Wright earnestly believes that he’s thriving on this unconventional and demanding comeback trail. The Red Sox right-hander is not rehabbing a bum shoulder or a tender elbow. In effect, he had to re-train the muscles in the lower half of his body following a lengthy stretch of inactivity.

De La Rosa spins gem in PawSox's 5-3 victory over Toledo

May 8, 2014

PAWTUCKET — There was a time Thursday afternoon when Rubby De La Rosa didn’t appear as if he would make it out of the second inning.
Toledo’s three runs in the frame came as a result of five consecutive batters reaching with two outs. De La Rosa allowed RBI singles to Ben Guez and Daniel Fields, while the pitcher’s own throwing error enabled the Mud Hens to plate another run.

Workman, PawSox done in by long ball

May 7, 2014

PAWTUCKET --- As good as Brandon Workman was on Wednesday night – and he was very good – his counterpart was just a tad bit better.

Toledo Mud Hens starter Kyle Lobstein delivered his best outing of the year, limiting the Pawtucket Red Sox to four hits and a free pass in 6 1/3 scoreless innings, and the Hens’ bullpen kept the PawSox off the board the rest of the way in securing a 4-0 victory at McCoy Stadium.

Cumberland's McNulty’s distance running takes her from Bishop Feehan to Stanford

May 7, 2014

ATTLEBORO – If not for Abigail McNulty’s father pushing her in the direction of high-school running, there is no story about how this Cumberland native and Bishop Feehan senior blossomed into a long-distance ace that will be Stanford-bound this September.

To borrow from a popular television series: “Father Knows Best.” Tom McNulty certainly fits the bill after parlaying a strong tennis career at Feehan into a scholarship to Providence College.

Mount tops Cumberland in "Pink Out" softball game

May 6, 2014

CUMBERLAND — In an outstanding display of sportsmanship and community concern, especially for those who have suffered from cancer, Cumberland High and Mount St. Charles conducted a “Pink Out” contest at Tucker Field on Tuesday afternoon.
When Clippers’ skipper Marty Crowley opened his heart and invited MSC veteran mentor Cliff Matthews to partake in such a fundraiser last month, the latter jumped at the chance.
The coaches produced an emotional yet fun-loving ceremony prior to the Division I tilt, and five cancer survivors took part in the event.

Wilson's been thumbs-up in PawSox's bullpen

May 6, 2014

PAWTUCKET — The Alex Wilson who posted a 10.80 ERA in four Grapefruit League outings is a distant memory.

In his place is a reliever who has been a rock solid contributor at the backend of Pawtucket’s bullpen. Entering Tuesday’s game against Toledo, the right-hander has posted a microscopic 0.71 ERA in 12.1 innings. International League foes are hitting a paltry .143 against Wilson, who is averaging 10.7 strikeouts per nine innings.

PawSox learn the power of sacrifice

May 6, 2014

PAWTUCKET – The PawSox devoted a portion of Monday afternoon’s pregame experience to bunting – a come one, come all session where attendance is not mandated but rather encouraged.

No, this often forgotten discipline at the minor-league level was done not in direct response to recent events involving the parent club.

Laverdiere leads Lions past Broncos on links

May 5, 2014

BURRILLVILLE – Understanding beforehand that Lincoln High senior co-captain and stellar linksman Jon Wahl would sit out the match, sophomore Jake Laverdiere took a rather subdued, stable approach on Monday afternoon.

It would be he that took the leap from No. 3 to the second spot in the lineup, but he didn’t let that affect him. Laverdiere and senior co-captain James Isabella fired respective scores of four-over 40 and eight-over 44 to propel the unbeaten Lions to a 178-207 victory over Northern Division foe Burrillville on Crystal Lake Golf Club’s par-36 front side.
