SOFTBALL PREVIEW: Lincoln is still the team to beat in Division I, but don't sleep on Clippers, Mounties

April 1, 2014

Veteran Mount St. Charles head coach Cliff Matthews couldn't help but pitch a bit of levity when asked how his girls' softball team should fare when Division I fast-pitch action begins this week.

“It's not about Lincoln or Cumberland, La Salle or Coventry; it's all about the Mounties!” he laughed. “Tell (Lions' mentor) Dick Ryan we're coming after them.”

Naturally, he was joking. How could he not? Lincoln hasn't lost a game since 2011.

DOMINO EFFECT: How the PawSox plan to reap the benfits from World Series Champion Red Sox

March 30, 2014

PAWTUCKET – “Champions Rise” is once again en vogue at McCoy Stadium. This time, though, the popular slogan is not directly paying homage to the building’s primary tenants.

Last year, “Champions Rise” was synonymous with the Pawtucket Red Sox and the franchise’s 2012 Governors’ Cup title. As patrons passed through the main entrance at McCoy, they were greeted by a colossal banner that proved a fitting salute to a fitting champion.

After busy stint in big-league camp, PawSox manager Boles eyes regular season

March 30, 2014

PAWTUCKET – As Kevin Boles discovered this spring, the day-to-day duties and responsibilities of managing the Pawtucket Red Sox will come in good time.

Reached over the weekend from Fort Myers, Boles noted that he and PawSox coach Bruce Crabbe remained with the parent club until the near completion of Grapefruit League play. Keeping the Triple-A manager around the big-league atmosphere is a fairly common practice for the Red Sox, as Boles recalled that his PawSox predecessor, Gary DiSarcina, reported to the minors just as camp was set to conclude.

MSC alum Hayward bringing heat this spring for Bulldogs

March 29, 2014

SMITHFIELD -- Over the last 10 months, the right arm of Bryant University senior Vaughn Hayward has been in high demand all over New England.

In the early summer, Hayward, a 2009 graduate of Mount St. Charles, pitched for the Plymouth Pilgrims of the New England Collegiate Baseball League, and led the team in earned run average. He then discovered the Cotuit Kettleers of the prestigious Cape Cod League were seeking his services for their stretch run.

Family, school, basketball finally fit for Carle

March 28, 2014

In a recent conversation with former Central Falls basketball standout Rob Alers, he was asked the whereabouts of fellow C.F. alumnus and his roommate at Lyndon State, George Carle.

With immediate confidence – the kind that comes when you’re pretty sure about something – Alers ventured a guess as to his good friend’s location on the Vermont-based campus.

“He’s probably in the gym as we speak,” was what Alers’ senses were telling him.

Woonsocket Little League, Rhode Island Athletic Club offer offseason training to young ballplayers

March 25, 2014

WOONSOCKET — Now that it's official, that the East Woonsocket and Bernon Little Leagues have merged to form one massive Woonsocket Little League, secretary Lisa Godfrin and Rhode Island Athletic Club co-owner Mike Reynolds more or less have done the same – and in an unusual sort of way.
Because some of the children involved may not know each other as well as they perhaps would like, Godfrin and Reynolds chose to put together an offseason training regimen at the club, located at 600 Social St.

Powerhouse Juanita Sanchez hammers North Smithfield for third straight Div. III girls' title

March 22, 2014

KINGSTON — North Smithfield High sophomore forward Samantha Kent stood just outside her locker room just before 1 o’clock Saturday afternoon flashing a rather satisfied grin.
Deep down, she and her teammates knew it would take a Herculean collective performance to dethrone two-time defending champion Juanita Sanchez in this, the R.I. Division III Tournament championship game.
The Northmen failed in their attempt, yielding to the taller and more wily Cavaliers, 59-27, at the Ryan Center, but they were hardly disconsolate.
There were no tears; disappointment, naturally, but nothing more.

For Friars, it's never too early to look ahead

March 22, 2014

PROVIDENCE — As much as Ed Cooley probably wishes he could sit back and enjoy the magic carpet ride his Providence Friars have ridden this month, he knows the importance of pressing forward. Reflections will come in due time.

Kecoughtan (Va.) products Fortune, Bullock share similar path to Providence

March 22, 2014

SAN ANTONIO – In a perfect world, Ivan Thomas would have watched two of his former players take the court for Providence College Friday night.

Instead, when Thomas tuned in to see the Friars square off against North Carolina, he saw just one of his ex-Kecoughtan (Va.) High School pupils in action.
