Woonsocket girls nip Barrington for big victory

February 2, 2012

BARRINGTON – Woonsocket scored one of its most satisfying victories of the season on Thursday night, rallying from an early 7-0 deficit to edge Barrington 48-43 and take over second place in Division I-North.
Kailey Fugere scored 30 points and Michelle Brayboy added 13 for the Villa Novans, who are now 9-3 and have won their last six league games. The victory avenged an early-season 51-32 loss to Barrington on Woonsocket’s home court.
Fugere added 11 rebounds and netted the decisive basket with 40 seconds left to play as Woonsocket took a 48-43 lead and then held on for the win.

Despite playing two very uneven halves Wednesday night, Providence was able to secure a rare Big East triumph at the expense of Rutgers, 78-67. The win snaps a four-game losing streak for the Friars, who placed five players in double figures led by strong performances from Bilal Dixon (18 points, 10 rebounds) and Vincent Council (11 points, 14 assists).
“I thought today was our day,” said a clearly-relieved Ed Cooley, his Friars now 2-8 in the league and 13-10 overall.

If Burrillville wants to remain in the top four of the Division I’s power standings and play for the new Championship Division crown next month, then this weekend is the one that could make or break the Broncos’ chances.

January 31, 2012

PAWTUCKET – If Mike Tamburro were to take a page from late night talk show David Letterman and compose a top 10 list based exclusively on all the achievements and accolades bestowed upon him over the years, chances are the exercise would tug at the heart of the team president of the Pawtucket Red Sox.

The next time you visit Youtube.com, do yourself a favor and type in “Will Blackmon Recovery.” The segment is only 10 minutes in length and offers terrific insight into someone who’s been repeatedly knocked down throughout his six-years-and-counting NFL odyssey, only to refuse to stay down for the count.

January 30, 2012

CUMBERLAND — After surviving a staph infection scare that shut down the Cumberland High wrestling program for a week, the Clippers return to the mat this week for a pair of tough matches with La Salle Academy and Cranston West.
“Every match we have from here on out is going to be tough,” Cumberland coach Steve Gordon admitted on Monday. “Next week, we host unbeaten Hendricken and the week after that we visit Warwick Veterans. Both of those teams are state title contenders.”
Gordon is just happy to have his team wrestling again.

Broncos breeze past Blue Wave

January 30, 2012

PROVIDENCE — There was no doubt in Lindsay Rachlow’s mind that her team would be competitive in Division II this winter.
In her first season as head coach of Burrillville High last year, Rachlow watched her Broncos struggle during the adjustment stage with an 0-9 start. But they then ran off eight straight victories to eventually make the playoffs. From that squad, only two seniors graduated.

January 30, 2012

Why not Jose Iglesias?
More than a week has gone by since the Red Sox traded shortstop Marco Scutaro. The exchange with Colorado marked the second time this offseason that general manager/budget balancer Ben Cherington has shipped away a potential starting shortstop, last month’s Jed Lowrie-to-Houston swap officially re-catalogued as the first domino to fall.
