WOONSOCKET --- The second period belonged to Mount St. Charles. So did the Mounties’ showdown with La Salle Academy on Friday night.
Zach Samborsky tallied a pair of goals during a high-scoring middle period that saw the Mounties light the lamp four times and eventually take off with a 7-2 win before one of the largest crowds of the season at Adelard Arena.
WARWICK – That’s one way to break out of a slump.
Senior Jessica Salisbury earned her first-ever hat trick and senior teammate Kayla Kiernan scored twice and also had three assists as North Smithfield cruised past the Warwick Lady Titans, 7-0, Friday night at Thayer Arena. The win snaps a four-game losing skid that began on New Year’s Day with a 4-1 setback to Division I co-leader Mount St. Charles Academy.
WOONSOCKET --- Outshooting a team by a overwhelming 57-7 margin is usually an ingredient to a blowout victory, but that wasn’t the case on Friday night in Mount St. Charles Academy’s big showdown for first place with La Salle Academy.
The Mounties fell victim to a 53-save performance by one of the state’s best netminders, junior Holly Scott, but were still able to skate away with a hard-fought 4-2 victory at Adelard Arena that kept them unbeaten at 8-0.
PAWTUCKET – The long-running offseason production the PawSox put on, better known as the Hot Stove gathering, has always served a dual purpose.

When it comes to Woonsocket High’s boys basketball team, the old axiom of everyone loves a winner comes to mind. The flip side, as revealed this winter, is that very few people are willing to make the trip through snow and ice on a school night to watch this year’s 1-8 team play its home games.

WOONSOCKET — High school basketball coaches have a lot in common with teachers who send their students through rigorous courses like physics or chemistry. Hoop mentors must stand on the sidelines, trying to explain the finer points of their sport, while players try to absorb those lessons in the midst of competition.
East Providence’s Alex Butler and Woonsocket’s Kyle Ivey-Jones did their best to educate their players on Wednesday night when the Townies visited the Villa Novans for a battle between two sub-.500 Division I teams.
NORTH SMITHFIELD — Kayla Kiernan has built up an impressive resume during her fantastic high school hockey career at North Smithfield High.
A state champion and the state’s goal-scoring leader as a freshman. A First-Team All-State pick as a junior, a Second-Team All-Stater as a sophomore. A three-time First-Team All-Division selection. And the list goes on.
And just when you thought she couldn’t top what she’s done, Kiernan has an golden opportunity to tack on two more marvelous feats to her resume -- the state’s all-time goal-scoring leader and first-ever 100-goal scorer.

PROVIDENCE – Minutes after finishing his 55-meter race on Monday afternoon, Jessie Charette sat down on the track and took off his racing flats. The Woonsocket High senior placed third, edged by teammate and overall winner Jalen Evans and runner-up Butch Giguere of Ponaganset at the line in a Northern Division tri-meet at the Providence Athletic Facility.
But despite coming up short at the finish in his quest for individual glory, Charette was still smiling. His trademark grin was evident.

PROVIDENCE — Freddy Gobewole has had problems with his shoulder since his junior campaign last year when he tore his rotator cuff during a scrimmage game for the Shea High football team.
But that hasn’t stopped the talented senior from tearing up the track with his unmatched speed.

An interesting aspect of Rhode Island high school wrestling is the traditional powers typically avoid one another until the final month of the dual-meet season, choosing to compete in out-of-state tournaments in December and January before taking each other on during February.
In wrestling, familiarity isn’t a good thing. Nobody likes to tip their hand before the pot gets big enough to mean something.
