Burrillville/Ponaganset co-op team excels on ice

February 12, 2011

BURRILLVILLE — When it comes to the public school teams, there aren’t too many folks in the state who are as big as fan of them as longtime coach Gary Rouleau.
That being noted, you can’t blame Rouleau if he’s been particularly excited about the truly outstanding season his Burrillville/Ponaganset co-op team is enjoying this winter.
The Broncos, who skated to an easy 7-0 triumph over the Barrington/Mount Hope co-op squad on Saturday night at the Cranston Ice Rink, have won five games in a row and sit in second place in the standings with a 10-2 record.

Novan girls place fourth at Large School meet

February 12, 2011

PROVIDENCE — It's not all about winning state championships.
With an emerging track and field program like the Woonsocket High girls, it's all about taking it one meet, one year at a time.
The Villa Novans, who last week copped their second straight league tile in the Dwyer Division, took another positive step forward on Saturday afternoon at the Providence Athletic Facility. Competing in the hard-as-nails Large School Championship, Woonsocket finished fourth among the nine schools with a solid 51.5 points.

Mounties blank Moses Brown, 6-0

February 11, 2011

WOONSOCKET --- The rematch contained half as many goals and not as much drama as the first meeting, but it did give Mount St. Charles Academy something the team was unable to grab its first time out with Moses Brown.
A lopsided victory.
The Mounties produced three power-play goals and two shorthanded scores and put a firm grasp on their lead in the Division I standings on Friday night by skating to an impressive 6-0 win over second-place Moses Brown before a large gathering at Adelard Arena.

Mixed martial arts event coming to Twin River

February 10, 2011

LINCOLN --- The Blackstone Valley will certainly make its presence felt at Classic Entertainment & Sports, Inc.’s next mixed martial arts show.
Five local fighters, three from Pawtucket and two from Woonsocket, will be featured on the undercard of an action-packed “Rhode Rage” show on Friday, Feb. 25, at the Twin River Event Center.
This will be CES’s third MMA card in Rhode Island, and while its inaugural “First Blood” show last Sept. 17 and “Snow Brawl’ event on Dec. 2 at Twin River were smashing successes, “Rhode Rage” could top them both.

February 10, 2011

NORTH PROVIDENCE --- Ashley Dubois became the fourth player in the history of the Woonsocket High girls’ program to reach 1,000 points on Wednesday night in the Villa Novans’ 57-43 victory on the road over winless North Providence High.
Dubois, who entered the game with 997 career points, scored her first points of the night on a layup in the game’s first minute, and a little more than a minute into the contest, she reached the milestone by hitting the first of two free throws.

Clippers take down Hendricken

February 10, 2011

WARWICK — Cumberland and Hendricken looked like they were in a hurry to get home and study when they met in a battle of unbeaten Division I powers on Wednesday night.
In a dual-meet that barely lasted 40 minutes, Cumberland rode eight pins and a major decision victory to a 52-30 victory over the Hawks.
Cumberland and Warwick Veterans are now the lone remaining unbeaten squads in Division I. The Clippers will host the Hurricanes next Wednesday night in a meet that should decide the dual-meet champion.

Success is difficult to define in high school

February 8, 2011

Some things I think I think:
It was nice to see North Smithfield’s Corinne Coia gain some local recognition for her productive basketball career at Lincoln School. The 6-foot-4 senior, who has signed a letter of intent to play for the University of Rhode Island, scored 25 points on Monday night and now has 1,019 points in her career. She passed 1,000 career rebounds earlier this season.

Cumberland swimmers sweep Mounties

February 8, 2011

WOONSOCKET – In her freshman year of high school swimming last winter for Cumberland High, all Courtney Kent did was win a state title. Kent shocked the field by capturing the 500-yard freestyle with an impressive time of 5 minutes, 6.45 seconds at the Tootel Aquatic Center at URI.
What does the tenth-grader expect to do for the encore?
How about cop two individual titles at the Feb. 19 state championship and possibly break a state record by a certain U.S. Olympian, who makes Rhode Island her home.
