Kiernan's OT goals shocks La Salle

March 4, 2011

KINGSTON – Fifth-seeded North Smithfield survived a tight, back-and-forth battle with No. 4 seed La Salle Academy in its Division I quarterfinal matchup Friday night, leaving Boss Arena with a 3-2 overtime win in the best-of-3 series.
High-scoring senior Kayla Kiernan netted the game-winner when she scored just four minutes into the OT period off the Rams’ standout goalie Holly Scott. Keirnan tally came after several attempts by the Northmen near the crease.
“It was a mess in front of the net,” said N.S. coach Bill Nangle. “We just kept banging away and she scored on the five-hole.”

Mounties, Clippers win playoff openers

March 4, 2011

WOONSOCKET – Mount St. Charles seized control early in this one en route to a 7-2 triumph over Smithfield in Game 1 of the best-of-three quarterfinals Friday night at Adelard Arena. The three-time defending state champion Mounties can close out the series with a win tonight (puck drops a 8 o’clock) at the Smithfield Ice Rink.
A win would give venerable MSC head coach Bill Belisle an even 900 in his illustrious career on the bench.

Gardner defends EBA title on March 16 in Boston

March 3, 2011

WOONSOCKET --- You will have to forgive Joe Gardner if he’s been a little antsy this winter.
After fighting four times during a seven-month span last year and winning the EBA (Eastern Boxing Association) New England light heavyweight title last November, the Woonsocket Boxing Club fighter has gone the last four months without a bout.
“I’m not used to this,” added Gardner. “It’s been longer than I expected. I’ve been itching for a fight and I was hoping to jump in there right away.”
But Gardner knows his wait won’t be long.

MSC girls survive Warwick Vets' upset bid

March 3, 2011

WOONSOCKET – Two years ago, Mount St. Charles Academy was the top seed from Division II-North. Instead of advancing far into the playoffs, however, the Mounties saw their season come to an abrupt close with a shocking two-point loss to Scituate in the preliminary round.
Before her top-ranked team took to the floor in Thursday’s opening-round contest with Warwick Veterans, a No. 8 seed from Div. II-South with the worst record in the entire league, head coach Nina Morey thought about that upset to the Spartans.

Woonsocket girls top S.K. in playoff opener

March 2, 2011

WOONSOCKET – There’s something to be said about playoff experience.
Kailey Fugere and Ashley Dubois showed just why on Wednesday night.
The Woonsocket High teammates, who have been instrumental players for the Villa Novans in their last two state titles, including the Division I crown last year, stepped up with huge efforts against a pesky South Kingstown outfit.

Girls' hoops playoffs set to tip off

February 28, 2011

A dozen teams from the Blackstone Valley will be shooting for the same goal — a strong postseason run that hopefully leads them to a state championship — these next two weeks when the R.I. playoffs take flight.
In two of the three division tournaments, there are clear favorites – unbeaten Barrington High is the team to beat in Division I, while powerful Middletown High leads the way in Division III.
But Division II appears to be wide-open, with a handful of teams capable of rising above the pack and winning the title.

Lincoln earns one title at state wrestling meet

February 27, 2011

PROVIDENCE — Regular season dual-meet results don’t carry over into the tournament season. Each wrestler, no matter how big his reputation and how long his list of accomplishments, must begin anew when the opening whistle sounds to start a tournament match.
That’s the beauty of this sport, which focuses on a team aspect during the dual-meet season. The emphasis changes to individual results during the postseason.

Brooks as Big East POY? Pass

February 27, 2011

As the regular season winds down, the discussion for postseason awards and other laurels heats up. Suddenly the office water cooler or neighborhood establishment becomes the spot to discuss and dissect the merits of potential candidates, while those given autonomy to cast a vote sit down with pen, paper and DVD player, study tea leaves and rub the Magic 8-Ball before filling out the ballot.

Richard making a difference at Woonsocket High

February 26, 2011

WOONOCKET — Three years ago, George Briggs retired from a more than three-decade career as a educator in the Woonsocket school system.
Briggs was also contemplating doing the same from his post as the longtime (and successful) track and cross-country coach at the high school level.
But one dedicated individual, one person he's had the opportunity to work alongside for the past four years has made him think otherwise — his good friend and girls' head cross-country, track coach Dan Richard.
