PAWTUCKET â The Pawtucket Red Sox are pleased to announce RH starter Anthony Ranaudo and catcher Christian Vazquez have both been selected to the International League All-Star Team for the 2014 Triple-A All-Star Game that will be played on Wednesday, July 16 at 7:05 pm at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, North Carolina.
CRANSTON â Hanging from the kitchen wall in Dick and Rollie Ernst's cozy Philmont Avenue abode is a laurel he received after his North Smithfield High School icemen captured the R.I. Division III Boys' Hockey Tournament crown with a 6-4 triumph over East Providence at Schneider Arena.
The date: March 26, 2006.
PAWTUCKET â For Bryce Brentz, slow and steady must prevail in his quest to shake free of the persistent hamstring issue that has his season on pause.
âThe progress has been good and weâre ahead of schedule right now, but we donât want to have any more setbacks,â said the PawSox outfielder when reached Monday in Fort Myers, Fla.
Presently, his days are filled with restoring strength to the right hamstring strain that has kept him out of the lineup since May 15.
BURRILLVILLE â Cumberland I head coach Steve DâAbrosca had hoped for a premier collective performance from his crew on Monday evening, but wasnât quite sure if heâd get it.
His troops did, and didnât, surprise him.
Righthander Abbie Vallely turned in a magical performance in the circle, yielding just three hits and a trio of walks while whiffing 10, and his offense produced four doubles as Cumberland I coasted to a 15-2 triumph over Glocester/Burrillville in a R.I. District IV Major Division (11-12) Tournament round-robin finale at Hauser Field.
PAWTUCKET â Mookie Betts made his Pawtucket Red Sox debut on June 3. Barely three weeks later, the highly-coveted prospect saw the Red Sox call an end to his Triple-A apprenticeship and throw another log into the âMookie Maniaâ fire pit.
PAWTUCKET â Earlier this week, Kevin Boles and Ron Johnson met for lunch at the Old Canteen â a restaurant located on Providenceâs historic Federal Hill that made for an interesting backdrop for the two baseball lifers.
NORTH SMITHFIELD -- David Fraley admitted he was taking the day off from training Friday, but would in fact be back on his bike with fervor this afternoon. After all, he’s 65, and his body needs some rest, especially after lifting weights twice a week and riding his bike dozens of miles in Franklin another two or three days.
PAWTUCKET â Even though several potential suitors were knocking on his door, Andres Torres was not going to sign with a major-league club until he felt fine physically.
âI wasnât ready because I had the surgery (to repair a strained left Achillesâ tendon). It takes time. I just took my time and made sure that I was good to go,â said Torres on Thursday, his first day with the Pawtucket Red Sox. âI [heard] from a few teams, but I was just waiting for the right moment. Once I feel good, I just signed with Boston.â
PAWTUCKET â If you werenât settled into your seat at McCoy Stadium until the second inning Thursday night, you missed a lot.
A five-run first inning highlighted by Garin Cecchiniâs grand slam propelled Pawtucket to a 7-3 victory over Norfolk before 5,297. Cecchini turned on a 2-1 offering from Jason Gurka and deposited it into the right-field bullpen for his third home run of the season.
The homer enabled Cecchini to take over the club lead in RBI with 30. The previous leader was Bryce Brentz with 28. Brentz hasnât appeared in a game for the PawSox since May 15.
PAWTUCKET â There have been three editions to Paul Dicksonâs handy and comprehensive âThe Dickson Baseball Dictionary,â though no revised version has graced bookstore shelves in the past five years.
If and when Dickson gets around to updating the gameâs vernacular â 952 pages of words and phrases suggests that the author has covered all the bases (no pun intended) â he should make it a point to insert the full name of the Red Soxâ current version of a Swiss Army knife: Brock Holt.
