WOONSOCKET – Mount St. Charles and The Prout School are certainly no strangers to exciting and memorable Division II playoff encounters. Who can forget the 2009 finals at McCoy Stadium that saw the Mounties earn the title with an eight-inning, walk-off win in Game 2?

How about the 2010 finals between the same two teams that saw MSC respond from a Game 1 setback to capture the next two?

Mount grads depart, but memories stay

WOONSOCKET – With an eye on Mountie traditions, 153 members of the Class of 2015 received their diplomas during Mount St. Charles Academy’s 91st commencement ceremony Sunday afternoon.

The ceremonies inside the Brother Adelard Ice Arena included a special tribute to members of Mount’s Class of 1965, who stood to receive special 50th Anniversary diplomas issued by the school.

PROVIDENCE  –  Arielle LaCroix fired a splendid three-hitter and fanned nine to propel North Providence High to a tight 2-0 victory over North Smithfield in a R.I. Division II Tournament winners’ bracket semi at the RIC diamond on Sunday afternoon.

“It’s about finishing the job,” said Crins moments before taking the practice court for the final time this spring on Saturday. “Our goal this year has been to hate to lose because that will force you to want to win more.”

For the first time in decades, Rhode Island Interscholastic League brass chose to conduct its annual state Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Brown Stadium not on the first Sunday in June but the initial Saturday.

The day was May 13. The scene was the outdoor track at Cranston West. The meet was the Girls’ Northern Division Championship.

On that cool spring afternoon, Cumberland junior Meaghan Scullin distinguished herself by capturing three events, the high jump (5-1), triple jump (35-5 1⁄4), and 400 (:59.7). She also grabbed second in the long jump (16-10 3⁄4), an event she won at this past winter’s indoor state meet.

Woonsocket couple charged in infant's death

WOONSOCKET – The parents of an infant girl who died in Brooklyn, Conn., in February are facing homicide charges in the death of the eight-month-old.

Justine Barber, 28, and Kevin Hartshorn Jr., 32, both of 336 Providence St., were arrested on Connecticut State Police warrants Thursday.

The CSP says Barber and Hartshorne live at 633 Providence St., but a spokesman for the agency said Barber was located at Butler Hospital in Providence. Hartshorn was arrested in the city by Woonsocket police.

CUMBERLAND  –  With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, junior Kat Kent ripped a triple to right-center, and scored on sophomore Emily Anderson’s timely two-bagger to deep center, to lift Cumberland High to a seemingly-safe 18-12 lead.

The Clippers didn’t know it at the time, but that proved to be the clinching run during a wild 18-17 win over Cranston West in a R.I. Division I Tournament preliminary game at Tucker Field on Friday.
