PAWTUCKET â Bruce Guindon would like to set the record straight regarding his role as the Pawtucket Red Sox official scorer.
First off, the International League, not the PawSox, employs Guindon. Translation: He is not in the home teamâs back pocket. The Pawtucket native and registered Interscholastic League football and hockey official is empowered and instructed to make the correct call, the right one.
PAWTUCKET â It is sometimes said that being the only state in the nation that marks Victory Day with an official holiday gives Rhode Island a distinction of a dubious sort, but for John Leclair it is anything but.
As the city man attended a wreath-laying ceremony to mark the occasion at Veterans Park Monday, he brought with him two type-written pages detailing the horrors his father endured after the World War II Army medic was captured on the Philippine island of Battan in 1942.

PAWTUCKET â Kevin Millwoodâs tenure with the Pawtucket Red Sox has come to an end. Now the 36-year-old will have to weigh whether to seek out another opportunity or bow out gracefully, a decision that could be complicated based on the right-handed pitcherâs belief that he still has something to give.
For now, though, Millwood plans on visiting family he has based up and down the East Coast and squeeze in as many rounds of golf as possible. That sounds like someone who isnât optimistic heâll be on a mound again this season.
HARMONY â Glocester Country Club is more than just a golf course. Situated on Waterman Lake, this private club also offers tennis, swimming and boating for its members. A sandy beach and tree-lined picnic grove border the lake. Clay tennis courts are located near the main clubhouse, adjacent to a putting green.
The club is situated on Route 44, just west of Greenville.
PROVIDENCE â His hair soaking wet and his feet inside some soggy pair of racing flats that just endured more than an hourâs worth of rainfall, Patrick Moulton sized up the weather for the inaugural Rock ânâ Roll Providence Half Marathon on Sunday morning with a glass-half-full approach.
âIt got tough, but at least it wasnât hot,â he said. âIt got gusty a few times, but for August you canât complain. It could have been 100 degrees out there.â

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) â Insurgents shot down a U.S. military helicopter during fighting in eastern Afghanistan, killing 30 Americans, most of them belonging to the same elite Navy SEALs unit that killed Osama bin Laden, as well as seven Afghan commandos, U.S. officials said Saturday. It was the deadliest single loss for American forces in the decade-old war.
CUMBERLAND - The School Committee will meet Thursday to discuss the designation of funds to match a federal COPS Secure Our Schools grant.
The Cumerland Police Department was awarded an $82,111 SOS grant in September, to be used for enhancing school safety practices including funding programs and continuation of existing programs that help prevent school violence.
The grant award period is from September 2010 through August 31, 2012.
WOONSOCKET â When Amy Thibault was a fourth grader at Bernon Heights Elementary School, a hopscotch grid on the pavement was all that passed for outdoor recreational facilities.
Now her daughter is a third grader at Bernon Heights, and this is what they have: Zippo. You know, as in nothing.
âThey don't even have a hopscotch anymore,â says the secretary for the Bernon Heights PTO. âThe children currently play on a blacktop and in a field adjacent to the parking lot.â
All that could change if the PTO wins a $25,000 Pepsi Refresh Project grant to build a new playground, says Thibault.
CUMBERLAND â When your intention is to win a road race, itâs always helpful to have a little course knowledge before stepping foot on the starting line.
Lack of that one minor detail cost Kerwin Vega a victory at last yearâs Cumberlandfest 5K. With a slight lead over Woonsocketâs Corey Brunelle during the last stretch of the five-kilometer race, Vega ran past the final left-hand turn to the finish line inside Diamond Hill State Park. That miscue allowed Brunelle to quickly seize control and produce a narrow one-second win over Vega.
BRISTOL, Conn. â Itâs official: Chris Wright is back.
He made that loud and clear on Saturday, delivering a game-tying two-run double in the bottom of the first inning, then firing 3 1/3 innings of shutout relief as Cumberland American Little League edged Andover National Little League, 5-3, in the New England regional tournament opener for both teams at Breen Field.
