PROVIDENCE - The game changed on an alley-oop.
Rhode Island freshman Jordan Hare rose above the Providence College defense to emphatically finish a perfectly executed play with 15 minutes, 22 seconds left in the second half to cut the Friars' lead to five.
As it turned out, the alley-oop was the best thing that happen to PC because Friar coach Ed Cooley opted to eschew his zone defense against the athletic Rams and play man-to-man. Over the next 8 minutes, 21 seconds the Rams didn't make a basket, went 0-for-8 from the field and committed six turnovers in a 72-57 defeat.
PROVIDENCE â In the end, Bryce Cotton suited up for the Providence Friars. The real surprise came in the role he played Thursday night against intrastate rival Rhode Island.
PROVIDENCE â Dan Hurley spent time under the same roof as one of his former high school players Thursday night. In his private moments, the URI head coach was probably thrilled that Sidiki Johnson was sitting on Providenceâs bench wearing a sharp black suit rather than basketball attire.
NORTH SMITHFIELD â Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin and the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) are bringing attention to the dangers of texting and driving with a high school awareness tour that visited North Smithfield High School Wednesday.
WOONSOCKET â A former Woonsocket Middle School teacher convicted of having a sexual relationship with a female student has been paroled from the Adult Correctional Institutions after serving just 12 years of a 20-year sentence.
Richard R. Lalime Jr., 42, registered as a sex offender with the Woonsocket Police Department on Nov. 21, the same day he was released from the ACI.
James DiChristofero of North Smithfield and his 7-year-old grandaughter, Alivia Verasammy, also of North Smithfield, enjoy the Annual Tree Lighting at Veterans Memorial Park, as part of Woonsocket's Main Street Holiday Stroll Thursday night.

PROVIDENCE â Whenever a new face enters into the Providence College vs. URI discussion, it seems appropriate to inquire as to whether said participant understands the hubbub surrounding this annual intrastate hoops encounter.
On the hardwood, Charles Correa is a two-time, first-team All-State selection.
Should the St. Raphael Academy senior repeat the honor this season, he would become just the second three-time recipient in program history (1990s standout Robert Griffin owns the distinction as the Saint to earn three consecutive âtop five players in the stateâ laurels).
