Accidental blaze damages St. Michael's Ukrainian Church

November 21, 2012

WOONSOCKET – When Tina Perkins answered the pounding on the rectory door, the pastor’s wife from St. Michael’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church couldn’t believe what she was seeing.
Flames had broken through the roof of the iconic granite church located at 74 Harris Ave., just 20 yards or so from the side door of the rectory.
“The firefighters were banging on the door, telling us to get the kids out of the house,” she said. “The back of the church was engulfed in flames. It got up into the roof and was coming through the rafters.”

Boston Red Sox name Beyeler first base coach

November 20, 2012

PAWTUCKET – There really is something to managing the Pawtucket Red Sox.
Taking a page out of the playbook that treated predecessors Ron Johnson and Torey Lovullo quite well, Tuesday saw Arnie Beyeler parlay his successful two-year run as Pawtucket’s skipper into a big-league coaching gig. More good news as Beyeler will jump from Pawtucket to Boston, where the 48-year-old will serve as the first-base coach on new manager John Farrell’s staff.

November 20, 2012

CUMBERLAND — Labeling the Thanksgiving game between Division II playoff participants Woonsocket and Cumberland as meaningless is utter blasphemy – at least in the eyes of the two head coaches.

Come the following Tuesday, the Villa Novans and Clippers will engage in a game of high importance – a semifinal-round clash that will take place at the respective home fields and determine the field for the Division II Super Bowl.
