PROVIDENCE — Gov. Lincoln Chafee’s plan to radically overhaul the state’s sales tax structure is effectively dead.
After more than six hours of nearly unanimous testimony denouncing Chafee’s proposal to lower the state sales tax from 7 to 6 percent and broaden it to a vast array of goods and services that are now exempt, House Speaker Gordon Fox had heard enough.

WOONSOCKET- Ms. Linda A. Dubois, 61, of Park Ave., Woonsocket, died April 5, 2011 at Oakland Grove Health Care Center.
Born Dec. 19, 1949 in Woonsocket, a daughter of Omer and Lillian (Morin) Dubois of Blackstone, MA.
Linda worked as an aid where she really enjoyed her clients for the Homefront Health Care of Woonsocket, she was a professional waitress which took up most of her life for the former Moons Restaurant in Cumberland, the former Eldorado Restaurant in Woonsocket and also worked for the former Woonsocket Brush for 38 years.
Stanley E. Olech
NO. SMITHFIELD- Stanley E. Olech, 89, a resident of the St. Antoine Residence, No. Smithfield passes away peacefully on Tuesday at the residence.
Born September 4, 1921 in Woonsocket.
He was the son of the late Joseph and Michaline (Aczkiewicz) Olech, he resided in No. Smithfield all his life.
Stanley was employed as a Technician at the former Slatersville Finishing Co. and the Stamina Mills before retiring.
He was a WWII Army Veteran serving in the Medical Corp.

WOONSOCKET — After nearly two decades as a Division I program, Woonsocket High dropped down to Div. II this spring – a new league with plenty of unfamiliar faces.
Head coach John Marsella is taking a realistic approach to how his team will fare in the lower division, refraining from getting over confident despite fielding a solid bunch of players.
PROVIDENCE — The three dozen or so businessmen and women who filled the marble staircase of the Statehouse Rotunda Tuesday were quieter, better dressed and more well behaved than most of the demonstrators who regularly assemble there, and they seemed less than comfortable with the whole idea of speaking out and waving signs, but they were just as angry as many of the others who come to that spot to protest.

Gendreau
WOONSOCKET - Normand A. Gendreau, 69, of Mendon Rd., Woonsocket, died Monday evening at Landmark Medical Center. He was the husband of Lucille N. (Bernier) Gendreau and the late Doris I. (Lavoie) Gendreau.
Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Alvin A. and Nora B. (Dufresne) Gendreau. He was a resident of Providence for most of his life before moving to Woonsocket several years ago.
Rachel F. Beauregard
WOONSOCKET- Rachel F. Beauregard, 63, of Poplar St., died Thursday at Landmark Medical Center.
She was born in Woonsocket a daughter of Cecile (Clouette) Gagnon and the late Raymond Gagnon.
Rachel was a homemaker and enjoyed playing bingo.
Besides her mother she is survived by two sons Michael Beauregard of Roxbury, MA and Mark Beauregard of Cumberland, a brother Richard Gagnon of Woonsocket and a sister Claudette Rousseau of Woonsocket. She is also the sister of the late Robert Gagnon.
Lillian E. Therien
WOONSOCKET- Lillian E. (Cournoyer) Therien, 85, formerly of Woonsocket and Jensen Beach, FL, died Monday April 4th at The Holiday in Lincoln. She was the wife of the late Armand F. Therien.
Jeanne M. Belba
WOONSOCKET- Jeanne M. (Tardif) Belba, 86, formerly of Rock Ridge Rd., died Saturday at the Friendly Home.
Born in Canada, she was a daughter of the late Josephat and Eugenie (Parenteau) Tardif.
Jeanne worked many years at the former Beverly Club and El Dorado Restaurant. She was a member of the St. Joseph Senior Citizens. Jeanne loved to sew and also enjoyed bingo, scrabble and cribbage.
Alfred E. Caron
NO. SMITHFIELD- Alfred E. Caron, 84, resident of No. Smithfield, died April 11, 2011 at Landmark Medical Center, Woonsocket. He was the beloved husband of 57 years to Doris (Zacharie) Caron.
Born in Sturbridge, MA, a son of the late Alfred and Alice (Morin) Caron. He was a US Navy Veteran of WWII and the Korean Conflict.
Alfred retired as a steamfitter from Arden Engineering after 30 years and also was a 50 year member of UA Local 51.
He was an avid outdoorsman.
