Volleyball Mounties make quick work of Townies

WOONSOCKET — Ever since Mount St. Charles made the move to Division I two seasons ago, the Mounties have hooked up with Division I-North foe East Providence to play in some competitive matches, with both sides bringing out their very best brand of volleyball.
On Monday night, the Mounties and Townies renewed acquaintances, but to the dismay of the fans that packed the Mounties’ gymnasium, they saw two teams trying to shake off their early season cobwebs and overcome more than their share of errors.

A sizeable crowd turned out for the home opener of the Woonsocket Villa Novans football game against East Providence at Barry Field Saturday. The crowds brought the team good luck as they walked away with the 21-0 victory.

B&E suspect injured in alleged tussle with police

WOONSOCKET – A man whose lower lip had been pierced for jewelry in at least 10 spots had to be taken to the hospital when the cosmetic incisions started bleeding following a scuffle with police early Monday.
Justin M. Lawler, 25, and his girlfriend, Amanda Jeanne Glode, 29, both of 425 Diamond Hill Road, were both arrested shortly before 2 a.m.
Police said they were investigating a complaint of breaking and entering when they visited the couple’s third-floor apartment. The complaint was filed by Glode’s cousin, a woman in her 20s who lives in another apartment on the same floor.

Primary day arrives in Woonsocket Tuesday

WOONSOCKET – It’s primary day in the city, an all-Democratic affair that features seven candidates vying for three spots in the General Assembly.
And for two of those spots, the results of today’s polling are final because there are no challengers waiting in the wings to face off against the winners in the general election on Nov. 6.

WOONSOCKET- Anita (Riendeau) Laliberte, 89, of Rhodes Ave, died September 8, 2012 in The Friendly Nursing Home, Woonsocket. She was the beloved wife of Ronald C. Laliberte whom she married, August 21, 1943 and recently celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary.
Born in Woonsocket, she was the daughter of the late Oliva and Blanche (Plouffe) Riendeau.

BURRILLVILLE-- Dorine Rocheleau 86, resident of Cumberland formerly of Harrisville passed away September 9, 2012 at the Emerald Bay Manor.
She was born in Oakland RI, a daughter of the late Eli & Yvonne (Shedrick) Rocheleau.
Dorine lived most of her life in Burrillville; she was a member of the Rosary and Altar Society of St. Patrick's Church in Harrisville.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Roland E. Rocheleau.

NORTH READING, MA- Cecile L. (Tardif) Joly, 80, formerly of Wakefield, died peacefully, surrounded by family, at Meadow View Care and Rehabilitation Center in North Reading, MA on September 8, 2012.
Born in Woonsocket, RI on September 14, 1931, she was youngest of ten children of the late Josephat and Eugenie (Parenteau) Tardif.
After being raised in Woonsocket, she attended Our Lady of the Mountain Academy in Gorham, NH, from which she graduated with the class of 1949.

MILLVILLE, MA- James A. Scungio, 83, of Millville, died Sat. Sept. 8, 2012 at home after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth A. (Larson) Scungio.
A lifelong resident of Millville, Mr. Scungio was employed for 35 years at the former Draper Corp. in Hopedale, retiring in 1978. He later worked at the Sheldonville Nursing Home in Wrentham for 11 years until 1989.
He was born Jan. 9, 1929 in Millville the son of the late Giacommo and Sarah (Trementozzi) Scungio.
He was a member of St. Augustine's Church and an avid furniture refinisher.

WOONSOCKET- Claire B. (Beaudet) Brunelle, 67, of Woonsocket, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, September 8, 2012 with her family by her side. She was the beloved wife for 46 years of Paul G. Brunelle.
Born in Woonsocket on November 8, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Alphonse and Germaine (Lauziere) Beaudet.
She was the loving mother of Paul J. Brunelle, Normand Brunelle and his wife, Carie, and her cherished grandchildren Alexander and Amelia Brunelle, all of Woonsocket.
