WOONSOCKET - Maureen G. Koback 57, resident of Woonsocket where she lived most of her life, passed away at her resident after a prolonged illness. Maureen was born in Woonsocket a daughter Annabelle (McPherson) Koback of Woonsocket and the late Stanley Koback.

Body of missing senior found in Blackstone

WOONSOCKET – The search for a missing man ended tragically Tuesday when police found his body in the Blackstone River hours after they began looking for him.
The body of Andre Genereux, 61, was found in shallow water at the foot of a boat ramp in River Island Park, less than a half mile from his house at 31 Wilson St.
Two patrol officers spotted Genereux’s body from the Bernon Street Bridge around 2:30 p.m., roughly two hours after police issued a Silver Alert for him.

City endures more armed robberies

WOONSOCKET – A gun-wielding crook held up Dunkin’ Donuts on Diamond Hill Road Friday night, but two men who tried to hold up a gas station on Social Street yesterday morning left empty-handed.
Nikhil Makhija, the proprietor of the Valero station at 1023 Social St., told police two men approached him at the counter about 5:54 a.m. yesterday and demanded money.
Police reports say Makhija began yelling and swearing at the men, but they weren’t frightened off until he told them the police were already on their way.

Fire in Commercial Block evacuates tenants, closes Liberty Market

WOONSOCKET – A fire in Main Street’s historic Commercial Block yesterday forced the temporary evacuation of tenants from 11 upstairs apartments and heavily damaged a convenience store on the ground floor.
Most bystanders never saw the fire, which was largely trapped between the exterior brick wall on the south side of the rambling building and an interior plaster wall.
Capt. Michael Morin, assistant deputy state fire marshal for the Woonsocket Fire Department, said the fire was located above the ceiling of Liberty Market, between the ground floor and second story of the building.

McGair: High school realignment formula in need of tweaking

At the end of day, high school sports are not based on which teams are successful and which ones aren’t. Their very existence is predicated on providing teenagers with a level playing field rooted in fair competition.

If winning a championship happens to accompany what should be an enriching experience, that’s pure gravy. If not, the question that needs asking is whether the experience provided was rewarding from a “fair fight” standpoint.

Gordon back for 44th season as Clippers’ wrestling mentor

CUMBERLAND — Steve Gordon can’t help but smile when recalling the images of his Cumberland High matmen celebrating their second title in three years at the R.I. Interscholastic Wrestling Championships last Feb. 25.
They did so on the stellar moves of then-senior captain Tom Lacroix, who represented the Clippers in the 195-pound weight class at the event finals, held at the Providence Career & Technical High School field house.

BLACKSTONE, MA - Arthur B. Brown, 71, of Milk St., died November 28, 2012 in Landmark Medical Center, Woonsocket. He was the husband of Earlene (Juggert) Brown of Blackstone. Born in Los Angeles, CA he was the son of the late Roy A. and Ethel F. (Newberry) Brown.
A Vietnam Air Force Veteran, Mr. Brown worked as a computer programmer for EMC, Hopkinton, MA. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fly fishing, camping, backpacking and canoeing and was also a Corvette enthusiast.

NORTH SMITHFIELD - Irene (Metivier) "Mem" Lacombe, 94, of Saint Paul Street died November 29th at home surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Alfred Lacombe.
Born in Albion, RI on July 28, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Francis and Dinora (Metivier) Metivier.
Irene was a weaver in various local textile mills until her retirement in 1978.

BURRILLVILLE - Jeannette B. (Cruise) Rochefort, 89, died Friday Nov. 30, 2012 in Landmark Medical Center, Woonsocket. A resident of Harrisville, she was born in Pascoag, daughter of the late Joseph and Delina (Perreault) Cruise.
She worker at Polytop in North Smithfield for many years before retiring.

H. Charlotte Lamontagne

WOONSOCKET - H. Charlotte (Sarrasin) Lamontagne 88, a long time city resident, died Tuesday, November 27, in the Trinity Health and Rehabilitation Centre. She was the wife of the late Raymond Lamontagne. Mrs. Lamontagne was born in Woonsocket, a daughter of the late Philippe and Auglore (Pratte) Sarrasin. She was an alumna of the RI College of Pharmacy, and worked as a Registered Pharmacist in Pratte's drugstore as well as other area pharmacies and in California as well. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Association.
